Sean Longstaff joined Leeds United from boyhood club Newcastle United this summer, having come through the ranks on Tyneside.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 6\u20192\u2033 midfielder featured as a starter in just 12 games in all competitions for Newcastle last season, with Leeds United<\/a> swooping in to add more physicality and intensity to their midfield ranks.<\/p>\n

Like many others this summer, Longstaff\u2019s physical profile will suit Leeds<\/a>. The former Newcastle midfielder was first linked to Leeds<\/a>\u00a0back in March 2024 but a deal has finally been struck in June 2025 with\u00a0Longstaff penning a four-year deal at Elland Road<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a\u00a0bittersweet feeling for Longstaff to leave his boyhood club<\/a>, having been with them since the age of nine. However, his game time under Eddie Howe was dwindling and a fresh start should mean regular football.<\/p>\n

He was well thought of in the north east, as Sandro Tonali believes Longstaff is underrated<\/a>\u00a0but it is a former Newcastle teammate that helped convince the 27-year-old midfielder of an Elland Road switch, with\u00a0Karl Darlow explaining Leeds as a club to Longstaff<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Obviously, Darlow. Talked to Darlow straight away,\u201d he said when asked who he had met at the club. But I\u2019ve gotten to meet everyone, it seems like a really good group. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve heard great things Obviously, I spoke to Karl a lot about the team and the club, and he said: \u2018There\u2019s nothing but good things about the group and you\u2019ll absolutely love it.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, you just want to settle in as quick as possible. I think everyone\u2019s sort of been really nice. It\u2019s a small world, football, so everyone will know someone. It\u2019s a great way to meet everyone and get to know them a bit better and end up on the pitch together.\u201d<\/p>\n

He has since spoken via TNT Sports (Discovery+<\/a>) about Darlow further and how the pair have a bromance growing at Thorp Arch. <\/p>\n

Longstaff explained: \u201cHe\u2019s\u00a0a bit of a comfort blanket and everyone laughs that I never leave him alone. To be honest, at the start, I\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0be leaving him alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interviewer: \u201cDid he save you a seat, then? First day?<\/p>\n

Longstaff added: \u201cNo, the lads were all laughing saying\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0going to kick everyone out their seats, just so I can get next to him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll\u00a0just follow him around for a bit, but we\u2019ll sit separate for now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Longstaff has already been handed the number-eight shirt<\/a>, it seems. It signifies that he will be a key component of Leeds\u2019 team next term, even if they have a number of options in their engine room.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Michael Bridges upon signing, Longstaff explained his dad\u2019s impact on sealing the move from Newcastle to West Yorkshire.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cTo be honest, I think he\u2019s really excited for us. He said the best thing he\u2019s ever done in his career was moving away from home and coming out of your comfort zone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he wanted us to do it for a little while, to be honest. I think he\u2019s happy that I\u2019ve done it and I think he\u2019s hoping that it can bring the best out of me \u2014 and I\u2019m hoping the same thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs long as we\u2019re playing and happy, I think we\u2019re always happy.
