When I went to bed last night, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had just gone into their summit meeting in Anchorage, Alaska \u2013 and I really had not the faintest idea what I might wake up to. <\/p>\n

Would it be a comprehensive peace deal agreed between the two of them that would totally screw Ukraine; or would it be a furious Trump announcing massive, punitive sanctions against Russia over Putin\u2019s intransigence \u2013 something he had been threatening just a couple of weeks ago before announcing the summit? Or would it be any number of outcomes in between? Instead, we woke up to \u2013 well, what exactly?<\/p>\n

Sure, there was a lot of vacuous vibe stuff about progress, constructive talks, deeper understanding, but let\u2019s be clear about the headline: THERE WAS NO DEAL. The missiles, the attack drones, will continue and, as far as we can tell, there is no timetable for a ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held calls on Saturday with his Turkish and Hungarian counterparts, the Russian foreign ministry said, hours after a summit between the US and Russian presidents yielded no deal on ending the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The phone call between Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan took place at Turkey’s initiative, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement on its website.<\/p>\n

“The foreign ministers exchanged views on the outcomes of the high-level Russia\u2013U.S. meeting held in Alaska on August 15,” the ministry said.<\/p>\n

Turkey has tried to keep diplomatic channels open to both sides during the war, acting as a Nato member, a partner for both Russia and Ukraine, and a potential mediator. <\/p>\n

Lavrov also held a call with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, the Russian foreign ministry said, in which “the parties discussed issues related to the Ukrainian crisis in the context of the outcomes of the Russia\u2013US summit.”<\/p>\n

Hungary has maintained close ties with Russia throughout the war, often opposing EU sanctions and continuing energy cooperation with Moscow, and drawing criticism from Western allies of Kyiv.<\/p>\n

European officials will decide this weekend whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will be accompanied on a visit to Washington to meet Donald Trump on Monday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has said.<\/p>\n

Asked whether German Chancellor Friedrich Merz could accompany Zelensky to Washington, Wadephul said plenty of Europeans would be willing to travel with the Ukrainian president if that decision were taken.<\/p>\n

“That’ll be agreed this weekend, and Friedrich Merz’s willingness to assume responsibility is evident; he has demonstrated this very clearly in the last few days. This will be discussed together,” Wadephul told German broadcaster ARD.<\/p>\n

President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of ignoring repeated international appeals for a ceasefire, warning that Moscow \u201chas not yet determined when it will stop the killing\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said the lack of willingness to halt strikes makes the situation more difficult and raises questions over Russia\u2019s commitment to \u201cpeaceful coexistence with its neighbours for decades\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian leader said he had spent the day coordinating with international partners and would hold further calls on Sunday.<\/p>\n

He confirmed preparations were underway for Monday\u2019s meeting with US President Donald Trump, thanking Washington for the invitation and stressing the need for dialogue \u201cat the level of leaders\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Zelensky also welcomed a joint statement from Nordic-Baltic nations and praised their \u201cvery significant assistance\u201d, adding that \u201cthe unity of all strengthens each one\u201d.<\/p>\n

Vladimir Putin has been \u201crewarded\u201d for his invasion of Ukraine with Donald Trump\u2019s summit in Alaska, leading experts have warned.<\/p>\n

Orysia Lutsevych, deputy director of the Russia and Eurasia programme and head of the Ukraine forum at the Chatham House think tank, said: \u201cAfter six bilateral Trump-Putin phone calls, five trips of Trump\u2019s envoy (Steve) Witkoff to Moscow, the Alaska summit, watched globally with so much anticipation and anxiety, failed to produce any tangible outcome to stop Russian aggression against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cRussia has received a reward for its invasion. <\/p>\n

\u201cTrump called Russia a \u2018great country\u2019 and said there is strong mutual understanding between the two parties.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis represents a further fissure in the already shaky Transatlantic alliance, the rupture of which is a primary Russian aim. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Alaska summit represents another step towards this goal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keir Giles, an associate fellow of the Russia and Eurasia programme at Chatham House, meanwhile, suggested there were \u201ctwo dangers\u201d which could emerge from the summit.<\/p>\n

The first is that Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelensky may now be perceived by Mr Trump as a \u201csofter target where he is more willing to exert leverage\u201d, and that the US president could \u201conce again try to strongarm Zelensky into compromising the future of his country\u201d.<\/p>\n

The second danger is that European leaders \u201cmight once again think the immediate danger has passed\u201d and become complacent, after their scramble to speak to Mr Trump ahead of the summit.<\/p>\n

Olga Tokariuk, Fellow in Democratic Resilience at the Center for European Policy Analysis, said the Alaska meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin offered \u201cgood news and bad news\u201d for Ukraine \u2013 but ultimately handed Moscow a propaganda victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good news is that apparently no deal that would force Ukraine to capitulate or make major concessions was agreed,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnother piece of good news is that a letter from Melania Trump was handed over to Putin, raising the issue of Ukrainian children illegally deported by Russia \u2014 a crime Putin was indicted for by the ICC.\u201d<\/p>\n

But she warned the optics were damaging. \u201cThe bad news is that Putin was given a five-star treatment by the US president Donald Trump\u2026 All these details and images are a clear propaganda win for Russia and are shared with delight in the Russian media. For Ukrainians, it was disheartening to watch Putin\u2026 being given such preferential treatment by the US.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cPutin had no intention to give up on his maximalist demands\u2026 Undoubtedly, Putin is coming back from Alaska even more convinced that he can get away with everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed what he said was US openness to providing security guarantees to Ukraine under a peace deal to end Russia’s war against Kyiv.<\/p>\n

“Robust and credible security guarantees are essential to any just and lasting peace. I welcome the openness of the United States to providing security guarantees as part of Coalition of the Willing\u2019s efforts,” Carney said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“The leadership of President Trump and the United States is creating the opportunity to end Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine.”<\/p>\n
