We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>U.S. State Department documents containing sensitive government information were discovered on a public printer at an Alaska hotel, two hours before a high-stakes summit between U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/trump-putin-peace-summit-ukraine-history-b2808496.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eight pages \u2014\u00a0containing a schedule, several phone numbers of government employees, and a luncheon menu \u2014 were found in a public hotel printer at Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage, a 20-minute drive from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson where the two world leaders met Friday to discuss the future of the war in Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>Three guests staying at Hotel Captain Cook found the<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/embed.documentcloud.org\/documents\/26052867-trump-putin-summit-documents\/?embed=1\"> pages around 9 a.m. Friday, two hours before the summit began, according to NPR.<\/a> It\u2019s not clear who left the papers but seven of the pages were \u201cproduced by the Office of the Chief of Protocol,\u201d according to images obtained by NPR, which is part of the State Department. <\/p>\n<p>The hotel, which has 550 rooms, declined to comment on where the printers were located.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy Pigott, the State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson, told The Independent in a statement: \u201cInstead of covering the historic steps towards peace achieved at Friday\u2019s summit, NPR is trying to make a story out of a lunch menu. Ridiculous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A White House spokesperson told NPR that abandoning the documents in a public printer was not considered a security breach. Below the names of Putin and his Russian aides sits a pronunciation for each name. Under the Russian president\u2019s name, the file suggests: \u201cPOO-tihn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pages also contained phone numbers of government employees and a gift that Trump planned to give Putin, described as \u201cAmerican Bald Eagle Desk Statue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sixth page showed a lunch seating chart. Putin\u2019s group would include his Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov, his Minister of Finance Anton Siluanov, and Minister of Defense Andrey Belousov.<\/p>\n<p>The seventh page revealed the menu for lunch, which ended up being cancelled Friday. The first course would have offered a green salad with champagne vinaigrette dressing and sourdough bread with rosemary lemon butter. For the main course, there would\u2019ve been a choice of either filet mignon with brandy peppercorn sauce or halibut Olympia. Buttery whipped potatoes and roasted asparagus were intended to be offered as sides while the planned dessert was cr\u00e9me brul\u00e9 with ice cream, the documents revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The last document showed what appeared to be a stylized copy of the menu. The incident, dubbed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/donald-trump-signal-leak-yemen-b2721344.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u201cSignalgate,\u201d <\/a>led to the ousting of Mike Waltz, Trump\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-waltz-hegseth-signal-white-house-b2743293.html\">national security adviser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other lawmakers and security experts lambasted the administration over the latest incident in Alaska. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many more headlines are we going to read about INCOMPETENT security breaches by the Trump Admin???\u201d Florida Democratic Congressman Darren Soto <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepDarrenSoto\/status\/1956728018715685166\">posted<\/a> on X Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Michaels, a UCLA law professor who specializes in national security law, told NPR the incident \u201cstrikes me as further evidence of the sloppiness and the incompetence of the administration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You just don&#8217;t leave things in printers.
