He also said \u201cthank you so much\u201d in English at the end of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/15\/politics\/video\/trump-putin-alaska-summit-facial-expression-digvid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summit with Trump<\/a>, which concluded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/15\/politics\/takeaways-trump-putin-summit-alaska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">without a deal<\/a> to end the war in Ukraine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40r00033b6nmtmbpkjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But typically, the Russian leader \u2013 a former intelligence officer with the Soviet Union\u2019s security service, the KGB \u2013 uses translators to avoid speaking in English during diplomatic conversations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40r00043b6n27gbp7su@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Putin is known to be fluent in German. During his days as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/11\/opinions\/understanding-putin-worldview-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KGB officer<\/a> during the Cold War, Putin was posted to Dresden, which was then East Germany. Putin and former chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel were known to speak German to each other during their meetings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40r00053b6nuc04read@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He also speaks good English, according to the Kremlin itself.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40r00063b6nr0bfhrfr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In May, when the two leaders spoke on the phone, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin was able to get an impression of what Trump was saying before his interpreter relayed a translation to him, according to Russian state media TASS.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40r00073b6nelkiahn7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That suggests he was likely able to understand his US counterpart when the pair traveled together briefly in Trump\u2019s presidential limo after their arrival in Alaska on Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40r00083b6n2nhb0g7z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Back in 2017, the Kremlin said that Putin understands English \u201calmost completely\u201d and even corrects his interpreters, according to Russia\u2019s Izvestia newspaper.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40s00093b6nksa0v2fl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When he is \u201con the go,\u201d Putin \u201cmost often speaks English, but when negotiations are conducted and when an official meeting is taking place, of course, he communicates through interpreters,\u201d Peskov said, the paper reported at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40s000a3b6nbnait10m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI myself have been translating at the highest level for a long time, so I know what kind of stress it is,\u201d Peskov said, according to Izvestia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40s000b3b6nomdw69g6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Using interpreters at high-level meetings also allows leaders room for maneuver.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40s000c3b6nbn11412q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, ahead of the talks with Trump, Putin seemingly did not understand or hear the uncomfortable questions shouted in English by the press about the war, none of which he addressed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/15\/politics\/video\/trump-putin-alaska-summit-facial-expression-digvid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making confused expressions<\/a> instead.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40s000d3b6n850hqa5l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked whether he would \u201cstop killing civilians,\u201d Putin appeared to gesture that he couldn\u2019t hear the question.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" There are quite a few examples of the Russian leader showcasing his language skills outside of negotiation rooms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40s000f3b6nh5g1zmi9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He gave an exclusive interview to CNN in 2008 about the conflict in Georgia, in which he spoke in part in English.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40s000g3b6npvueab06@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2013, he delivered a fairly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jrXf8Qn9pBI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long on-camera statement<\/a> in English to announce Russia\u2019s bid to host the 2020 World Expo in the central city of Yekaterinburg. \u201cIt will be a priority national project,\u201d he said in Russian-accented English in the two-and-a-half-minute clip.\n    <\/p>\n<p> After switching to German, Putin made small talk about his time living in what was East Germany, causing other officials in the meeting to chuckle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeebc40s000j3b6nsfjp5qlp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/15\/politics\/takeaways-trump-putin-summit-alaska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">On Friday<\/a>, Trump responded quickly to Putin\u2019s English-language invitation for another round of meetings in Moscow, saying: \u201cOoh, that\u2019s an interesting one. I don\u2019t know, I\u2019ll get a little heat on that one, but I could see it possibly happening.
