{"id":350954,"date":"2025-08-17T05:50:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T05:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/350954\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T05:50:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T05:50:12","slug":"life-of-march-photographer-alice-askew-celebrated-at-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/350954\/","title":{"rendered":"Life of March photographer Alice Askew celebrated at talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Alice Askew, who was born in North Devon in 1868, spent around 50 years in March, making significant contributions to the town&#8217;s photographic history.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  David Edwards, archivist of March Museum, presented an engaging talk on Alice&#8217;s life and work, showcasing a variety of her photographs taken each year between 1919 and 1949.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 1913, Alice became the manager at Messrs Brown &amp; Co, a photography shop on Broad Street.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She purchased the business in 1916 and became the photographer for The Cambridgeshire Times.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In December 1929, a fire damaged the original premises, prompting Alice to relocate the shop to a corner of St Peter&#8217;s Road.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>Recommended Reading:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambstimes.co.uk\/news\/25381148.tribute-chatteris-men-vj-day-anniversary\/?rel=cl_lsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tribute to Chatteris men for VJ Day anniversary<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alice&#8217;s legacy includes thousands of photographs capturing events and buildings in and around March.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She passed away in 1963 and was cremated in Peterborough.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The March Society&#8217;s next event is the AGM on Wednesday, September 17, at 7pm in March Library.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This will be followed by a talk from Chris Donnelly and Henry Stanier of the Cambridgeshire Geological Society.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambstimes.co.uk\/newsletters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Keep up to date with the latest news across Fenland\u00a0by signing up to our newsletter email alerts he<\/strong><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>Have you got a story you want to share with us?
