Putting a new tax on top of strict EU regulation on Big Tech would be \u201cputting petrol on [the] fire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland is among the European countries\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scoperatings.com\/ScopeRatingsApi\/api\/downloadstudy?id=f0d22fca-a133-481c-a66f-145292855b84\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most exposed<\/a>\u00a0to a trade war with the U.S. because it hosts subsidiaries of U.S. digital giants and also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/09\/half-the-place-would-be-blown-to-bits-the-irish-villages-under-threat-from-trumps-tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exported over \u20ac44 billion<\/a> worth of pharma products to America in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIreland has an extremely concentrated corporate tax base, which is heavily reliant on U.S. multinationals in particular,\u201d said Aidan Regan, a professor of political economy at University College Dublin, in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>Ten firms account for 60 percent of Ireland\u2019s corporate tax revenue and around 30 percent of its total tax revenue now comes from the corporate sector, according to Regan. \u201cIn terms of how the EU responds to all of this, Ireland is also quite squeezed,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. The promise of a global tax deal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has in recent days signaled to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that it wants to reopen discussions on a global tax deal.<\/p>\n<p>Washington never signed up to the part of the agreement aimed at making Big Tech groups and multinationals pay more tax in the countries where their customers are based, meaning that section of the deal has not yet been agreed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Irish Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin said over the weekend that the country would \u201cresist\u201d von der Leyen\u2019s proposals.
