The historic buildings, cultural landmarks and hidden gems will open their doors for one weekend only when European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) returns between September 13 and 14 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The annual festival offers free public access to heritage sites across <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/northern-ireland\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Ireland, <\/a>giving visitors the chance to explore places that are normally off-limits. From historic cottages, castles and mills to gardens, museums, guided walks and workshops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This year\u2019s theme, Architectural Heritage: Past Structures, Future Connections, will explore how historic buildings, structures and landscapes shape our communities, preserving the past while inspiring the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.belfastlive.co.uk\/all-about\/department-for-communities\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Communities Minister<\/a> Gordon Lyons, who launched this year\u2019s programme at Belfast\u2019s Riddel\u2019s Warehouse, said: \u201cEuropean Heritage Open Days are an opportunity to visit and engage with our local heritage and try new experiences, all of which are free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;This year\u2019s theme focuses on bringing together the past and present through architecture, workshops, talks, hidden spaces, walks and activities, with something to interest everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Highlights this year include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">A tour of Belfast Castle;<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">See behind the scenes at the Department for Communities Historic Environment Division Conservation Works Depot in Moira;<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Tour the Primate\u2019s Palace, Armagh, a beautiful neo-classical building dating from 18th century;<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Open Day at St. John&#8217;s Point Lightkeepers&#8217; Houses in Co. Down;<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Join a walking tour of Ebrington Barracks with DfC&#8217;s Principal Conservation Architect Manus Deery as he examines the development of the site and its fortifications over 162 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">EHOD is part of a Europe wide celebration of cultural heritage that takes place in 49 countries. In Northern Ireland, it is organised by the Department for Communities with support from the Council of Europe and the European Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Last year\u2019s event attracted over 75,000 visitors to 344 events across 230 sites, with highlights including behind-the-scenes tours of the Guild Hall, medieval re-enactments at Portaferry Castle, and special access to unique venues like Origami House and NI War Rooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">While many venues can be visited without a ticket, some require advance booking.
