Ruben Amorim defended Altay Bayindir after goalkeeping blunders returned to haunt Old Trafford when the Turkish player\u2019s error allowed Riccardo Calafiori to head in the \u00adwinner for Arsenal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Amorim was also forced to deny that he had dropped Andr\u00e9 Onana from Manchester United\u2019s matchday squad, saying the keeper had not yet trained enough after injury.<\/p>\n

Bayindir\u2019s mistake came from Declan Rice\u2019s 13th-minute corner, the Turk managing only to palm the ball on for Calafiori to head in. United complained that Bayindir had been impeded \u2013 William Saliba appeared to block him \u2013 to which Amorim pointed after the defeat.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you watch the ball, [the opponent] is allowed to do a lot of things at the corners,\u201d Amorim said. \u201cWe need to do the same. But when you touch that way [block], the goalkeeper needs to [be able to] use his hands to\u00a0catch the ball, not push \u00adplayers [out\u00a0of the way]. He chooses to push players and let the ball pass. But again, it\u2019s the rules. If it\u2019s allowed, we need to do the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amorim was defiant when asked if he considered starting Tom \u00adHeaton ahead of Bayindir after the latter\u2019s similar error allowed a Son Heung\u2011min corner to go straight in during the 4-3 Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham last season. Amorim referred to Bayindir\u2019s next \u00addisplay, in the FA Cup third-round 5-3 \u00adpenalty shootout win against Arsenal<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy? Without VAR [in the compe\u00adtition],\u201d the 40-year-old head coach said. \u201cWith VAR, it\u2019s a foul. And then what happened in the next game? Arsenal. Who saved the \u00adpenalty? Who saved the game?\u201d<\/p>\n

The Portuguese denied \u00addropping Onana, citing his recovery from a \u00adhamstring problem. Amorim said: \u201cNo, I didn\u2019t drop\u00a0Onana from the squad. I didn\u2019t drop one of the other two from the squad [\u00adBayindir, \u00adHeaton]. So it\u2019s not the case of \u00addropping Onana. It\u2019s not putting Andr\u00e9 Onana in just one week without \u00adseeing the game, without time, with training.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amorim was asked if he is content with Onana, Bayindir and Heaton. \u201cWe proved today that we can win any game in the Premier League, \u00adespecially against a great team like Arsenal, and we were the \u00adbetter team. I\u2019m happy with the three\u00a0goalkeepers.\u201d<\/p>\n

After United signed the No 9 \u00adBenjamin Sesko for \u00a373.7m, Amorim excluded Rasmus H\u00f8jlund, another centre-forward, from the matchday squad. He was asked if this meant the Dane would depart. \u201cWe\u2019ll see what is going to happen in the market.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of the defeat, Amorim said: \u201cWe deserved more and we were the better team, that is clear but in the end we lost. We need to work on the\u00a0things we need to improve. We need to defend set pieces.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did a lot of things right. There are a lot of things without seeing the video that we need to work on. I am really proud of my players. We stuck to the\u00a0plan even when the stadium was \u00adnervous, we continued to play the way we played and that will help us in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mikel Arteta was delighted with the victory. \u201cBig, big result,\u201d the \u00adArsenal manager said. \u201cWhen you feel that they [United] are building something special [and] want to [start] the season in a good way and you are able to come away with a win, I think I\u2019m very happy for our team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arteta was asked about the debut of his new No 9, Viktor Gy\u00f6keres. \u201cHe did a lot of things very well.
