{"id":352535,"date":"2025-08-17T20:56:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T20:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/352535\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T20:56:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T20:56:18","slug":"european-leaders-to-discuss-potential-security-guarantees-for-ukraine-with-donald-trump-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/352535\/","title":{"rendered":"European leaders to discuss potential security guarantees for Ukraine with Donald Trump \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The leaders of Ukraine and several other European states will discuss potential future security guarantees for the war-torn country with US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The meeting follows a summit held in Alaska on Friday between Mr Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin, and claims by a White House envoy that Russia has dropped its opposition to the West providing Nato-style defence pledges to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Steve Witkoff said: \u201cWe were able to win the following concession: that the United States could offer Article 5-like protection, which is one of the real reasons why Ukraine wants to be in Nato.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Article 5 clause of Nato\u2019s founding treaty enshrines the principle of collective defence, the notion that an attack on a single member is considered an attack on them all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He told US television on Sunday that this is a \u201cgame changing decision\u201d and \u201cthe first time we had ever heard the Russians agree to that\u201d. He did not provide details of what was discussed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There are concerns among Ukraine\u2019s supporters that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\">Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a> could face significant pressure in Washington on Monday, given his February talks with Mr Trump in the Oval Office descended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/video\/video\/2025\/02\/28\/make-a-deal-or-were-out-trump-berates-zelenskiy-in-oval-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/video\/video\/2025\/02\/28\/make-a-deal-or-were-out-trump-berates-zelenskiy-in-oval-office\/\">into a shouting match<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, this time he is expected to be accompanied in Washington by the leaders of Germany, France, Italy, the UK and Finland, along with Nato secretary general Mark Rutte and European Commission president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump\u2019s relations with European leaders can be prickly, and it is notable that the group includes several who he reportedly likes: Italy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/giorgia-meloni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/giorgia-meloni\/\">Giorgia Meloni<\/a>, Britain\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/keir-starmer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/keir-starmer\/\">Keir Starmer<\/a>, Finland\u2019s Alexander Stubb and Mr Rutte of Nato.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/editorials\/2025\/08\/17\/the-irish-times-view-on-the-trump-putin-summit-a-shameful-day-in-alaska\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Irish Times view on the Trump-Putin summit: a shameful day in AlaskaOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">European leaders who make up the \u201ccoalition of the willing\u201d on Sunday agreed Russia would face more sanctions and wider economic measures if it does not stop its bombardment of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking after the virtual conference, which was co-chaired by Mr Starmer and French president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emmanuel-macron\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emmanuel-macron\/\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a>, Mr Zelenskiy said: \u201cIt is important that America agrees to work with Europe to provide security guarantees for Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe need security to work in practice like Article 5 of Nato,\u201d he said. Kyiv says any such deal would amount to capitulation.
