We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/mayor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayor<\/a> Sir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/sadiq-khan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sadiq Khan<\/a> has said he would be \u201cmore than happy\u201d to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> \u2013 despite warning that the US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President<\/a> could be \u201cinadvertently radicalising people\u201d and is \u201cnot a force for good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Sadiq dismissed jibes that President Trump made against him on a recent visit to Scotland, where he claimed the London Mayor was\u00a0\u201ca nasty person\u201d who has \u201cdone a terrible job\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour politician said remarks such as those were \u201cwater off a duck\u2019s back\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, he told an event at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe it sometimes felt like he was \u201cnine years old again\u201d and \u201cin the school playground\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But Sir Sadiq, speaking at the Political Party show with comedian Matt Forde, hit back at the US President, saying: \u201cSomebody who has views like he does about black people, about women, about gays, about Muslims, about Mexicans, thinks I\u2019m nasty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally. He is the leader of the free world, arguably the most powerful man in the world, and really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He spoke out as he said that records showed since the middle of January this year \u2013 when Mr Trump began his second term in the White House \u2013 and July \u201cthere have never been more \u00a0Americans applying to British citizenship and living in London\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor said: \u201cSo I think Americans have got good taste by and large.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that he hoped the President would come to London during his state visit to the UK next month, with Sir Sadiq stressing the \u201cdiversity\u201d of the capital was a \u201cstrength, not a weakness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about this diversity, he insisted: \u201cI think it makes us stronger not weaker, richer not poorer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when President Trump says some of the things he does, it brings from the periphery to the mainstream, views that are potentially dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe inadvertently \u2013 I\u2019m not going to suggest he does it deliberately \u2013 he inadvertently could be radicalising people with views that could lead to them doing things that are dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He spoke out about fears that minorities \u201ccould be treated less favourably because of the views of the President of the USA\u201d as he accused Mr Trump of \u201cusing London and our diversity as a political football, as a proxy for a culture war\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The London Mayor continued: \u201cOn a personal level, it is water off a duck\u2019s back, but we can\u2019t run away from the fact that there are some really serious challenges we face as a western society and President Trump, in my view, I speak generally, isn\u2019t a force for good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However he insisted that he would be \u201cmore than happy to meet President Trump\u201d saying he would seek to show him that\u00a0it is \u201cpossible to be proud to be a westerner and a proud to be Muslim, that it is possible to be British, and proud to be British, and be of Pakistani origin and be a law abiding citizen and we aren\u2019t three headed monsters\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour politician said: \u201cI suspect President Trump may have formed a view of Muslims because of the actions of a small minority of really bad people who are terrorists and use Islam in a perverted way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I would want President Trump to know is that is a very small fraction of Muslims across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo if there was an opportunity to meet President Trump, I would be more than happy to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Your support helps us to tell the story From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":352670,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7757],"tags":[748,393,4884,257,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-352669","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-london","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-england","10":"tag-great-britain","11":"tag-london","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115046402662136536","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/352669","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=352669"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/352669\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/352670"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=352669"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=352669"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=352669"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
