{"id":352697,"date":"2025-08-17T22:31:39","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T22:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/352697\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T22:31:39","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T22:31:39","slug":"states-population-grew-by-almost-90000-last-year-eu-figures-show-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/352697\/","title":{"rendered":"State\u2019s population grew by almost 90,000 last year, EU figures show \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The State\u2019s population grew by almost 90,000  last year, according to figures produced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The population of the Republic stood at 5,439,898 at the end of last year compared with 5,351,681 at the end of 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the 27 EU countries, Ireland\u2019s annual population growth, at 1.64 per cent, is surpassed only by Malta and  is about seven  times higher than the EU average of 0.23 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurostat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurostat\/\">Eurostat<\/a> figures show Ireland reached a population of five million in 2020. With current projections, it is likely to reach 5.5 million by the end of this year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These  figures are different from  the estimates produced by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The Irish office\u2019s estimates run from April to April, and the figures for April 2024 to April 2025 have yet to be produced. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All indicators suggest the population is growing rapidly since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, buoyed by a strong labour market with a record 2.8 million people at work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2025\/08\/16\/irish-abroad-returning-home-its-been-hard-i-didnt-probably-know-the-ireland-i-was-coming-back-to\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018We can\u2019t have nice things in Ireland because no one follows the rules\u2019: Emigrants on returning homeOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The population increase is largely driven by inward migration. The last figures from the CSO show net migration (immigration minus emigration) to Ireland between April 2023 and April 2024 was 79,300. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) was 19,400, making for a total increase in the population of 98,700. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Recently, Minister for Finance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paschal-donohoe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paschal-donohoe\/\">Paschal Donohoe<\/a> was asked about a column in The Irish Times by David McWilliams suggesting inward migration would have to decrease to allow the housing supply to catch up with population growth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/07\/19\/david-mcwilliams-without-a-rapidly-expanding-supply-of-houses-the-number-of-newcomers-means-prices-cant-stabilise-2\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David McWilliams: This is what we need to do in Ireland if we want stable, affordable house pricesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/07\/12\/david-mcwilliams-ireland-needs-immigrants-and-an-economic-plan-to-accommodate-them\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David McWilliams: Ireland needs immigrants. But our economy can\u2019t accommodate an infinite numberOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Donohoe responded by saying the expanded labour force is generating tax revenues that can be invested into infrastructure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said investment in infrastructure will help the State cope with inward migration. \u201cA growing population with growing investment is how we will support our economy in the years ahead,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A Department of Finance report entitled Economic Insights published this month says labour shortages in the Irish economy cannot be tackled without inward migration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It states that unemployment is at a historic low. While 780,000 people between the ages of 15 and 64 (working age) are not in employment, the potential for many of them to take up work is \u201climited\u201d, the Department of Finance has concluded. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Many have not worked for years because of health issues, while others do not have the necessary skills to fulfil labour shortages in the economy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Unemployment in the construction sector declined to a record low last year, the report added, \u201cwhich underscores the importance of either attracting skilled labour from abroad or increasing the pipeline of apprentices or graduates in the sector\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report predicted labour force growth is unlikely to be sustained because of an increasingly ageing population and an expected slowdown in net migration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs a result, it will become increasingly important to maximise the labour force contributions of our existing working age population as well as productivity improvements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It concluded: \u201cIt underscores the role that both inward migration and productivity improvements will need to play to support employment and economic growth going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The State\u2019s population grew by almost 90,000 last year, according to figures produced by the European Union.
