Windows 10 retires on October 14, despite home users being offered an ESU \u201c<a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/windows-10-consumer-extended-security-updates-esu-program-33e17de9-36b3-43bb-874d-6c53d2e4bf42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/windows-10-consumer-extended-security-updates-esu-program-33e17de9-36b3-43bb-874d-6c53d2e4bf42\" aria-label=\"for the first time ever\">for the first time ever<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This affects most Windows 10 PCs in use today \u2014 \u201cWindows 10 version 22H2 (Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions),\u201d as well as \u201cWindows 10 2015 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB 2015.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/08\/16\/if-you-get-this-voicemail-your-google-account-is-under-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Google Confirms Account Attacks\u2014Delete This Phone Message\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/08\/16\/if-you-get-this-voicemail-your-google-account-is-under-attack\/\" rel=\"noopener\">ForbesGoogle Confirms Account Attacks\u2014Delete This Phone MessageBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s most important confirmation is that \u201cthe October 2025 monthly security update will be the last update available for these versions. After this date, devices running these versions will no longer receive monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You now have August\u2019s update and you will get two more. It is critical that you select one of the available options now to extend security support beyond October 14. If you\u2019re prepared to use a Microsoft account and OneDrive, you can do this for free. And if you would rather pay $30, this can cover as many as 10 PCs on a single account.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gs.statcounter.com\/windows-version-market-share\/desktop\/worldwide\/#monthly-202408-202508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/gs.statcounter.com\/windows-version-market-share\/desktop\/worldwide\/#monthly-202408-202508\" aria-label=\"latest data suggests\">latest data suggests<\/a> around 47% of all users are running Windows 10, versus 49% on Windows 11. Awkwardly, those numbers were 43% and 53% respectively last month.
