It involves challenging your brain to do something unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Experts from the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> explain that dementia is a group of related symptoms associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning. There are many different causes and many different types.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Dementia is not only about memory loss. It can also affect the way you speak, think, feel and behave. However, there are certain things you can do to reduce your risk of the disease. This comes as it was announced that services which are dementia &#8220;lifelines&#8221; for people living in rural <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/all-about\/county-durham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">County Durham<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/all-about\/northumberland\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Northumberland<\/a> will continue for three further years,<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/news\/north-east-news\/dementia-lifelines-support-500-people-32223985\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" as reported by ChronicleLive.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> as reported by ChronicleLive.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Dr Helen Moore, a dementia researcher with more than 20 years\u2019 experience in cognitive health, says one of the most effective ways to lower dementia risk is to spend five minutes a day learning something new. &#8220;It could be reading an article on a topic you\u2019ve never explored, trying a new word in a foreign language, or even solving a different type of puzzle,&#8221; she explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;The key is to challenge your brain with something unfamiliar. Just five minutes a day of this mental stretching can build cognitive reserve \u2014 the brain\u2019s resilience against decline.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why it works<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Research shows that mentally stimulating activities help strengthen neural connections and may delay the onset of Alzheimer\u2019s symptoms. Learning something new, even in small bursts, forces the brain to adapt, creating new pathways that could help offset age-related changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Think of it like exercise for your brain,&#8221; Dr Moore says. &#8220;You don\u2019t have to run a marathon \u2014 a short, consistent workout can still make a difference.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Live-in care experts at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/alderberrycare.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Alderberry CareLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Alderberry Care<\/a>, who support people with dementia, say they see the benefits of mental stimulation first-hand. &#8220;We encourage our clients to keep their minds active every day,&#8221; a spokesperson from Alderberry Care said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It might be playing a quick game of cards, listening to a podcast, or chatting about the news. Even a short mental activity can lift mood, boost confidence, and keep the mind engaged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They also stress the importance of variety. They added: &#8220;Switching activities helps work different parts of the brain. One day it might be a crossword, the next day a short walk with a conversation about what you see. These little habits can add up to a big difference over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Easy ways to get started<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you want to try Dr Moore\u2019s five-minute brain workout, here are a few ideas:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Learn a new fact every day \u2014 pick a topic you know nothing about<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Try a brain teaser or puzzle you\u2019ve never done before<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Listen to a short podcast on a completely new subject<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Practise a few words in another language<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Write down three things you noticed today that you\u2019ve never paid attention to before<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">While no single habit can guarantee you\u2019ll avoid dementia, experts agree that keeping your brain active is one of the best defences.
