positions he adopted after just a <a He also said that \u201cpeace must be lasting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cRussia must end this war, which it itself started,\u201d Zelenskyy said. \u201cAnd I hope that our joint strength with America, with our European friends, will force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/russia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a> into a real peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Here are some of the latest developments:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Zelenskyy met European leaders in Brussels earlier on Sunday and reiterated Ukraine\u2019s stance on land swaps<\/strong>, saying on X: \u201cUkraine\u2019s constitution makes it impossible to give up or trade land. Since the territorial issue is so important, it should be discussed only by the leaders of Ukraine and Russia at the trilateral \u2013 Ukraine, the US, Russia. So far, Russia gives no sign this will happen, and if Russia refuses, new sanctions must follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Ahead of Monday\u2019s peace talks in the US, Emmanuel Macron said that in order to have a \u201clasting peace deal for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a>, Ukraine needs a strong army\u201d. <\/strong>He added that European allies want \u201cUkraine\u2019s territorial integrity to be respected\u201d and that \u201cUkraine must be represented in any talks on Ukraine\u2019s future\u201d. The French president also said that \u201cour goal for tomorrow\u2019s talks is to present a united front between Ukraine and its European allies\u201d. Photograph: AP<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Zelenskyy has hailed the decision to offer security guarantees to Ukraine as part of a peace deal<\/strong> as he prepared to meet Trump. \u201cSecurity guarantees, as a result of our joint work, must really be very practical, delivering protection on land, in the air and at sea, and must be developed with Europe\u2019s participation,\u201d the Ukrainian president said.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>In announcing his visit to Washington, Keir Starmer praised Trump for his \u201cefforts to end Russia\u2019s illegal war in Ukraine\u201d.<\/strong> At the same time, the British PM reasserted Europe\u2019s red lines, saying the \u201cpath to peace\u201d could not be decided without Zelenskyy and that Russia should be \u201csqueezed\u201d with further sanctions. Starmer has deliberately sought to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/aug\/17\/keir-starmer-curious-relationship-trump-ukraine-talks-zelenskyy-russia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">position himself as a leader who can get along with Trump<\/a> while consistently stressing the red lines over any peace plan.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The US secretary of state, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/marco-rubio\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marco Rubio<\/a>, said Russia and Ukraine were both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/17\/rubio-trump-putin-russia-ukraine-war\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cgoing to have to make concessions<\/a>\u201d<\/strong> for there to be a peaceful resolution to the war. In interviews on Sunday Rubio said the talks in Alaska had \u201cmade progress in the sense that we identified potential areas of agreement \u2013 but there remains some big areas of disagreement\u201d. \u201cWe\u2019re still a long ways off,\u201d Rubio added. \u201cWe\u2019re not at the precipice of a peace agreement. We\u2019re not at the edge of one. But I do think progress was made and towards one.\u201d He declined to go into specific areas of agreement or disagreement.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Trump\u2019s Ukraine envoy, Steve Witkoff, said Putin had agreed that the US and European allies could offer Ukraine a Nato-style, \u201cArticle 5-like\u201d security guarantee<\/strong> as part of an eventual deal to end the war.
