British holidaymakers heading to the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/european-union\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union<\/a> have been told over the dangers of carrying too much money on their summer holidays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Martin Newman, author and financial expert, warned: &#8220;Cash is far less essential for travellers today. Most destinations accept cards and digital payments\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Martin advises that you \u201ccarry a small amount of local currency &#8211; about \u00a3100 to \u00a3150 &#8211; to cover essentials like taxis, tips, or markets.&#8221; James McCaffrey, finance expert at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.totallymoney.com\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">TotallyMoney<\/a> explained: &#8220;If you don&#8217;t declare the money, it could be seized, and you might have to pay \u00a35,000 to get it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/cost-of-living\/hmrc-update-over-spying-uk-32293601\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">READ MORE HMRC update over &#8216;spying&#8217; on UK households with more than 350 disciplined<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u00a3100 would be 115 Euros. The Foreign Office says you must declare cash of \u00a310,000 or more to UK customs if you\u2019re carrying it between Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and a country outside the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you\u2019re travelling as a family or group with more than \u00a310,000 in total (even if individuals are carrying less than that) you still need to make a declaration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you\u2019re travelling to Northern Ireland and carrying more than \u20ac10,000 (or equivalent) you must follow the rules for taking cash into Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The earliest you can make a declaration is 72 hours before you plan to travel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">James said: \u201cCarrying large amounts also puts you at risk of theft. Instead, topping up a current account with no foreign transaction fees might be safer for holiday spending.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">On Reddit, a Redditor advised: &#8220;Just pay by card where you can, and take a few hundred Euros in cash just in case. You can always use those debit cards to take cash out &#8211; their rates are better than the exchange you&#8217;ll get in the UK.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;This is it. If your bank doesn\u2019t offer some form of global money account that you can link to it, or just an account that doesn\u2019t charge for foreign currency transactions, move banks.
