Black Emperor<\/a> have removed their music from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/brands\/spotify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotify<\/a> and other streaming platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian experimental rock band have <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/4svpOyfmQKuWpHLjgy4cdK?si=fXSgRJPySIS7CvFbfDVRTw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removed their entire discography from Spotify<\/a>, but have also pulled their releases from Tidal and Apple Music. At the time of writing, only two albums\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/sg\/artist\/godspeed-you-black-emperor\/40884339\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1998\u2019s \u2018F# A# \u221e\u2019 and 2000\u2019s \u2018Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas To Heaven\u2019 are available on Apple Music<\/a>, while Tidal has been wiped clean.<\/p>\n<p>While the band have yet to formally address the withdrawal of their releases from streaming platforms, a rep for Kranky Records \u2013 on which the two aforementioned albums were released \u2013 confirmed to <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/godspeed-you-black-emperor-remove-music-from-streaming-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pitchfork<\/a> that the Godspeed You! Black Emperor albums are in the process of being removed from Apple Music.<\/p>\n<p>The rep said in a statement: \u201cKranky has always granted artists control over how their music is presented and disseminated.\u201d The only platform on which Godspeed You! Black Emperor\u2019s music is still available is <a href=\"https:\/\/godspeedyoublackemperor.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bandcamp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2911102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gybe_2010pic_300dpi8x10.jpg\" alt=\"Godspeed You Black Emperor\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1270\"  \/>Godspeed You Black Emperor \u2013 CREDIT: Yannick Grandmont<\/p>\n<p>Godspeed You! Black Emperor are now the latest band to remove their music from Spotify, joining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-on-removing-their-music-from-spotify-weve-been-saying-fuck-spotify-for-years-3883952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Gizzard &amp; The Lizard Wizard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/xiu-xiu-to-remove-music-from-spotify-due-to-ceo-daniel-eks-investment-in-ai-war-drones-3880645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xiu Xiu<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/deerhoof-to-remove-music-from-spotify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deerhoof<\/a>. All three bands have cited Spotify CEO Daniel Ek\u2019s investments in Helsing, a Munich-based company creating drones and artificial intelligence for military operations, as their reason for leaving the platform.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, people have been divided about streaming platforms and their impact on the music industry. In 2024, for example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/music-fans-and-artists-hit-back-as-spotify-ceo-claims-the-cost-of-creating-content-is-close-to-zero-3761004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ek sparked backlash for his comments relating to the cost of \u201ccreating content\u201d<\/a>, with countless users and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/music-fans-and-artists-hit-back-as-spotify-ceo-claims-the-cost-of-creating-content-is-close-to-zero-3761004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">musicians describing him as \u201cout of touch\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ek later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/spotifys-daniel-ek-tidal-fac-respond-to-backlash-of-ceo-saying-content-costs-close-to-zero-to-make-3762073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walked back on his comments, explaining in an apology that he had no intention of dismissing the struggles faced by musicians and using the \u201creductive\u201d label of \u201ccontent\u201d<\/a>. The negative response to this was heightened as, around the same time, it was confirmed that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/spotify-reports-record-profits-of-over-e1billion-3751725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotify had made profits of over \u20ac1billion (\u00a3860m), following staff being laid off and subscription prices rising<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The streaming platform also received criticism after it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/spotify-has-now-officially-demonetised-all-songs-with-less-than-1000-streams-3614010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">officially demonetised all songs on the platform with less than 1,000 streams<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/spotify-announce-profit-and-millions-more-subscribers-but-also-royalty-cuts-to-less-popular-tracks-3521362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making it harder for artists to generate royalties from their music<\/a>\u00a0and restricting new artists looking to crack the music industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Godspeed You!
