{"id":353756,"date":"2025-08-18T08:40:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T08:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/353756\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T08:40:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T08:40:20","slug":"council-praised-for-approach-to-vulnerable-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/353756\/","title":{"rendered":"Council praised for approach to vulnerable children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four key areas were assessed in a new report<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Primary-School-pupils-in-classroom.jpg\" alt=\"Bath and North East Somerset Council was praised for its approach to helping vulnerable children in a new report\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Bath and North East Somerset Council was praised for its approach to helping vulnerable children in a new report(Image: South Wales Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A local council has been praised for the quality of its services for vulnerable children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In a newly published report, Ofsted inspectors gave <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bath-and-north-east-somerset\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bath<\/a> and North East Somerset Council, which covers an area stretching up to Keynsham and Whitchurch just outside Bristol, a \u201cgood\u201d rating in four key areas relating to how it supports young people who may need help or protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cChildren in Bath and North East Somerset (BANES) continue to benefit from good quality support, help and services that have a positive impact on their lives,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cSenior leaders have a thorough understanding of the quality of support and services and have continued to make improvements since the time of the last inspection in 2022. This includes how well families are supported to keep children living with them when safe to do so, and the quality of work to reunify children with their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">When inspecting local authorities\u2019 provision of children\u2019s services, Ofsted inspectors assess four areas. These are: the impact of leaders on social work practice with children and families, the experiences and progress of children who need help and protection, the experiences and progress of children in care and the experiences and progress of care leavers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Councils are then given an overall effectiveness grade. BANES received a \u2018good\u2019 rating across the board in this year\u2019s report, which resulted in the same overall rating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A similar report into <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol City Council<\/a> in 2023 rated its overall effectiveness as \u2018requires improvement to be good\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However a follow-up visit in February this year said the council had taken important steps to make things better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cSince the last inspection in 2023, where the experiences and progress of children who need help and protection were judged as requires improvement to be good, determined leaders, including elected members, have shown energy and commitment to improving the response provided to children by frontline services,\u201d the inspector\u2019s letter to Hannah Woodhouse, BCC\u2019s Executive Director of Children\u2019s Services, said. \u201cImportant traction has been gained in most key areas that needed to improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In July 2024, Ofsted threatened Bristol council with a criminal investigation after it emerged eight vulnerable children looked after by the local authority were living in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/criminal-probe-threat-after-bristol-9424754\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal unregistered placements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Despite the overall good report for BANES, inspectors said more work needed to be done on the council\u2019s response to children who went missing, as well as the way it handled care leavers after they turned 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">BANES was also rated Good in Ofsted&#8217;s last inspection, in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ofsted typically inspects local authority children\u2019s services once every three years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Four key areas were assessed in a new reportBath and North East Somerset Council was praised for its&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":353757,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8818],"tags":[14140,381,3893,748,393,4884,29121,16,15,10000],"class_list":{"0":"post-353756","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-bristol","8":"tag-bath-and-north-east-somerset-council","9":"tag-bristol","10":"tag-bristol-city-council","11":"tag-britain","12":"tag-england","13":"tag-great-britain","14":"tag-keynsham","15":"tag-uk","16":"tag-united-kingdom","17":"tag-whitchurch"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115048875751034446","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/353756","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=353756"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/353756\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/353757"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=353756"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=353756"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=353756"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
