{"id":353770,"date":"2025-08-18T08:50:23","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T08:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/353770\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T08:50:23","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T08:50:23","slug":"bulldozing-uks-best-new-building-among-greater-manchesters-key-planning-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/353770\/","title":{"rendered":"Bulldozing UK&#8217;s &#8216;best new building&#8217; among Greater Manchester&#8217;s key planning updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These are all the significant developments tabled across the city-region recently<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755507013_543_0_JS377727222.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Salford University&#8217;s prize-winning Centenary Building.<br \/>\nN\/B this is as close as I can get to the building, all roads closed off<br \/>\nPicture Jason Roberts \/ Manchester Evening News<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Proposals to bulldoze what was once deemed the UK\u2019s best new building is one of many key developments planned for Greater Manchester recently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/salford\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Salford<\/a>\u2019s Centenary Building is set to make way for a huge \u00a32.5bn regeneration project in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The site, now sitting empty, has been earmarked for the regeneration project led by developer ECF, Salford council, and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/salford-university\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Salford University<\/a> \u2013 who own the building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Centenary Building won the Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling Prize in 1996, cementing its status as \u2018the UK\u2019s best new building\u2019 at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">To see planning applications; traffic and road diversions and layout changes; and more, visit the Public Notices Portal <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/publicnoticeportal.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The site has been empty for years, and at the end of 2024 permission was granted to knock it down along with the old Adelphi Building at Peru Street as part of the city\u2019s ongoing transformation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Now it looks as though plans for demolition are getting closer to becoming a reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Here is a breakdown of each borough\u2019s recently submitted public notices<\/p>\n<p>Bolton<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_st-james-new-bury.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>St James&#8217; is set to be used again for Christian worship<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Long-closed church set to be used for Christian worship again after plans scrapped<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A church is set to become a place of Christian worship once again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">New <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/bury\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bury<\/a> St James\u2019 church in Farnworth is the subject of a disposal scheme by the Church of England\u2019s diocese of Manchester. The church was closed for public worship in January 2012 as a result of a decline in the size of the congregation and \u2018inability to maintain the building\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Now a new scheme is being proposed for the building to be used by the Christ Apostolic Church Dominion Outreach for \u2018Christian worship, services and other religious activities\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">St James\u2019 has been the subject of other schemes for its re-use which have failed to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>Bury<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_bury-courthosue1.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The building is opoosite the main Bury Grammar school site (Pic: Fletcher CRE Ltd)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Historic \u2018courthouse\u2019 sixth form buildings with potential for 25 flats for sale at \u00a31.2m<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A courthouse building more recently used as a sixth form college is being marketed for sale for \u00a31.2m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Courthouse, on Tenterden Street, close to Bury town centre, is described as a \u2018historic building with plenty of character\u2019 which has \u2018potential to convert to 20 to 25 high quality apartments\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The buildings, most recently used by Bury Grammar School sixth form, include open plan class rooms and private study areas along with the original court room, which has been used as an assembly area.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Manchester-Skyline.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Roadworks are hitting three major routes in Manchester this week:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Moss Side: Moss Lane East will close from August 16 between Alexandra Road and Princess Road for resurfacing. It\u2019s expected to take six weekends, and Moss Lane West will follow suit on August 26. Supreme Start, the applicant, has submitted plans to create classrooms; staff offices; breakout spaces; and therapeutic support rooms suitable for children with social, emotional and mental health needs across the four floors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">SEMH schools provide tailored education for children who experience challenges with emotional regulation, behaviour, and mental health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Rochdale Road, Bridge Street &amp; Elizabethan Way Junction, Milnrow \u2013 Gas Works<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Cadent Gas will be carrying out work to replace the gas mains at the junction of Rochdale Road, Bridge Street &amp; Elizabethan Way in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/milnrow-and-newhey\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Milnrow<\/a>. The designers on the scheme are Pozzoni architects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Nearby residents objecting to plans for 12 lodges behind Victorian hotel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Plans to install 12 standalone lodges behind a hotel complex in Stretford have already prompted a number of objections from neighbouring residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">VSPG Housing wants to put the accommodation behind the Greatstone Hotel on Chester Road. The hotel consists of one detached and two semi-detached Victorian villas offering a total of 32 rooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It is near three Grade II listed buildings at the Gorse Hill Park entrance. The hotel was the subject of a demolition planning application five years ago with the then-owner Dowd and Company earmarking the site for a development of 56 apartments, but it was refused and turned down on appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">A56 Manchester Road, Altrincham \u2013 Active Travel Scheme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">To facilitate upgrades to junctions, both Sinderland Road and Barrington Road will be closed at their junctions with A56 Manchester Road. Signed diversion routes will be in place. Signed diversion routes will be in place during this time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Works expected to last until Sunday, November 30.<\/p>\n<p>Wigan<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Mosley-Common-new2.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Detailed plans for 219 affordable homes on the common tabled<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Detailed plans have been submitted for more than 450 homes on land at Mosley Common in Tyldesley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Kellen Homes and Great Places Housing Group have lodged a \u2018reserved matters\u2019 application for 219 affordable homes for shared ownership on land to the Guided Busway into central Manchester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The homes are part of a wider masterplan for more than 1,000 on Mosley Common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The masterplan emerged following the approval last year of the strategic document for development across Greater Manchester for the next 14 years, Places for Everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Meanwhile, a scheme for a further 244 homes on the common is the subject of another reserved matters application from major UK house builder Taylor Wimpey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"These are all the significant developments tabled across the city-region recentlySalford University&#8217;s prize-winning Centenary Building.
