{"id":353966,"date":"2025-08-18T10:40:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T10:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/353966\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T10:40:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T10:40:09","slug":"japan-germany-to-boost-security-cooperation-amid-wars-shifting-us-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/353966\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan, Germany to boost security cooperation amid wars, shifting US ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul agreed on Monday to strengthen bilateral cooperation, amid the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and shifting relations with the United States.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">During the first \u201cstrategic dialogue\u201d between the two nations, Iwaya and Wadephul agreed at a meeting in Tokyo to work closely towards a \u201cjust and lasting peace\u201d in Ukraine, the Japanese foreign ministry said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The ministers also pledged to cooperate on Indo-Pacific issues, including North Korea\u2019s nuclear and missile programmes, and on the Middle East, where a humanitarian crisis continues in Gaza amid Israeli attacks, the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the international order facing a severe situation, there has been a growing need for cooperation between <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/japan?module=related_topics&amp;pgtype=subsection?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan<\/a> and Germany,\u201d Iwaya said at the outset of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Wadephul described Japan as Germany\u2019s \u201cspecial partner in Asia\u201d, noting both countries shared a \u201clongstanding, deep friendship and close cooperation\u201d, along with common values and interests. He added that emphasising this in \u201ca time of crises and conflict\u201d was of particular importance.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Wadephul also noted that traditional allies such as the US remained important, but now faced new challenges.
