In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump\u2019s special envoy Steve Witkoff\u00a0said there was support<\/a>\u00a0for \u201cmuch more robust security guarantees [and] EU admission\u201d and suggested \u201cArticle 5-like\u201d protection was on the table for Ukraine, a reference to NATO\u2019s mutual defense provisions.<\/p>\n It’s unclear, however, whether Zelenskyy will view an \u201cArticle-5 like\u201d promise without troops on the ground as a sufficient deterrent, especially as Trump has previously cast doubt<\/a> on the U.S. commitment to NATO\u2019s common defense clause.<\/p>\n Conservative German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is also traveling to Washington on Monday, has so far been vague on the issue of a potential German troop deployment to Ukraine.
