Vandals daubed graffiti outside one of Birmingham’s oldest buildings.<\/p>\n

Information boards outside the Golden Lion Inn, benches, the bridge and the listed bandstand were covered in unsightly tags in Cannon Hill Park.<\/p>\n

It is believed vandals struck last week with the damage coming to light on Thursday, according to Councillor Izzy Knowles.<\/p>\n

The Golden Lion Inn was constructed between 1570 and 1590, in Deritend High Street, Digbeth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was moved “brick by brick” in 1911 to its current home in Cannon Hill Park and has not been in use for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n

Volunteers from the Friends of Cannon Hill Park<\/a> spent a couple of hours cleaning the graffiti tags from benches and the Golden Lion information boards.<\/p>\n

Councillor Knowles said the text is now readable but the paint and cleaning had damaged the surface of the boards.<\/p>\n

She said: “The bandstand and bridge will need specialist cleaning which I will organise via the council and Historic England.<\/p>\n

“Historic England are aware of the damage, which has been reported to the police as a crime.<\/p>\n

“Investigation will take place into identifying the owner of this tag and person(s) responsible for the damage.”<\/p>\n

The park is named Cannon Hill as it was the resting point of Royalist troops on their way to the Battle of Naseby in June 1645.<\/p>\n

The park includes 80 acres of formal parkland as well as 120 acres of conservation and woodland.<\/p>\n
