{"id":354220,"date":"2025-08-18T13:05:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T13:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/354220\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T13:05:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T13:05:13","slug":"dwp-issues-major-update-into-plans-to-increase-state-pension-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/354220\/","title":{"rendered":"DWP issues major update into plans to increase State Pension age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The proposed changes would see the UK mirror Denmark&#8217;s approach to retirement<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_psm_SCU_110415pensions_01.jpg\" alt=\"The Government has issued a call for evidence on whether to increase the state pension age in England.\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>A couple sorting out their finances.(Image: PA Photo\/thinkstockphotos)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The government has issued an update on a proposal to increase the UK State Pension age after publishing an open <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/calls-for-evidence\/third-state-pension-age-review-independent-report-call-for-evidence\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">call for evidence<\/a> ahead of a third review into raising the current threshold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2014\/19\/section\/27\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The Pensions Act 2014<\/a> requires the government to review the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/pensions\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">pension<\/a> age at least every six years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The state pension age is currently 66, rising to 67 by 2028 and the government is legally required to periodically review the age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ahead of next year&#8217;s decision, the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/dwp\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Department for Work and Pensions<\/a> (DWP) has appointed Dr Suzy Morrissey to prepare an independent report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This report must explore the key factors government should consider in determining the State Pension age for future decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">These elements include life expectancy, long-term sustainability and the international experience of Automatic Adjustment Mechanisms (AAM).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">AAM are rules ensuring that certain characteristics of a pension system respond to demographic, macroeconomic and financial developments, in a predetermined fashion and without the need for additional intervention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The call for evidence is seeking views on these areas from members of the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Dr Morrissey has said she is keen to hear views from a broad range of organisations, experts and individuals, including those who have an interest in the wider social and economic impacts of an ageing society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Anyone who wants to contribute their thoughts can do so by emailing independent.StatePensionAgeReport@dwp.gov.uk, or by sending a letter to: Caxton House, Tothill Street, London, SW1H 9NA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The DWP has <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/cost-of-living\/state-pension-age-increased-70-32107495\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">previously hinted<\/a> at increasing he current State Pension age to 68 or even 70, a move that would see the UK mirror Denmark&#8217;s approach to retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Scandinavian country recently revealed its intentions to elevate its State Pension age to 70 by 2040 and has linked its official retirement age to life expectancy since 2006 &#8211; conducting reviews every five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Currently, the Danish retirement age stands at 67 but is scheduled to climb to 68 in 2030 and 69 in 2035.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Those born after December 31, 1970 will face retirement at 70.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Recently, there have been <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.if.org.uk\/2025\/07\/15\/unsustainable-unpredictable-and-unfair-the-obr-highlights-why-the-triple-lock-on-the-state-pension-must-go\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">growing concerns<\/a> over the escalating expense of the triple lock guarantee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The triple lock guarantee is a UK government policy that ensures state pensions increase by the highest of three figures: average earnings growth, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/cost-of-living\/warning-uk-inflation-hits-highest-32070380\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">inflation<\/a> (as measured by the Consumer Price Index or CPI), or 2.5%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This policy aims to protect <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/pensioners\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">pensioners&#8217;
