Nationwide rain could bring an end to the UK\u2019s ongoing dry spell<\/a> in just a few days as Hurricane Erin continues to advance over the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n

Upgraded to category four on Monday, the hurricane<\/a> is threatening to bring severe storms and waves to the Caribbean and the east coast of the US in the coming days.<\/p>\n

This atmospheric activity is likely to bring a \u201cchangeable\u201d period of weather<\/a> to the UK in the coming days, the Met Office<\/a>\u2019s long-term forecast<\/a> said, especially in the North and West.<\/p>\n

Independent forecasters predicted that countrywide rain<\/a> could begin to hit the country from Wednesday 27 August, with storms stretching as far as 600 miles as most of the nation is hit. At its heaviest this rain could reach around 5mm an hour, but most regions will see between 0.2 and 3mm.<\/p>\n

The Met Office said the chance of widely wetter and windier weather like storms developing is \u201csmall\u201d, but admits it is \u201chighly uncertain\u201d at this stage.<\/p>\n

The cause of the uncertainty is the area of low pressure that Hurricane Erin will send towards the UK from across the Atlantic. This leads to unsettled weather conditions, while high pressure causes settled and fine weather conditions.<\/p>\n

Brits will likely enjoy fine and dry weather owing to high pressure over the bank holiday, which will be \u201cincreasingly eroded\u201d by the low pressure from the West in the following days, the Met Office said.<\/p>\n

After Hurricane Erin has travelled northwards, past the eastern side of Canada, \u201cit\u2019s likely to push its way across the Atlantic,\u201d said Alex Burkill from the Met Office.<\/p>\n

This can \u201creally play havoc with the forecast confidence for what\u2019s going to happen as we go through next week\u201d, he added. Forecasts are likely to become clearer in the coming days.<\/p>\n

In the coming week, dry weather is set to continue for most of the UK following last week\u2019s high heats. Parts of the country could see temperatures reach 27C on Monday and Tuesday.<\/p>\n

A northeasterly breeze means northern and eastern parts of the UK will be cooler on these days, reaching the low 20s.<\/p>\n

The continued dry spell comes after officials warned England was suffering from \u201cnationally significant\u201d water shortfalls, despite rain in July.<\/p>\n
