It\u2019s even worse when you\u2019re a country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t20002356nm51v2f34@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s the specter critics of President Donald Trump have raised after he fired the head of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics this month after disappointing jobs data. While there\u2019s no indication the data has been rigged (assertions from the White House aside) \u2013 or will be rigged in the future \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/12\/business\/bureau-of-labor-statistics-bls-trump-pick-ej-antoni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the White House\u2019s nomination of a partisan<\/a> to lead the government\u2019s economic data agency was enough to worry global economic and financial circles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t20003356no36q6qkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s historical precedent for that fear. Countries like Greece and Argentina have been both been punished by investors for putting out manufactured numbers in the past.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t20004356ntbg70xnq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPresident Trump has just taken one very negative stop along a slippery slope,\u201d Alan Blinder, a former vice chair of the Federal Reserve, told CNN. \u201cThe next worry is going to be manipulation\u201d of data.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t20005356nbdmfwnmg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At stake is the health of an economy relied upon by nearly every person on earth, directly or indirectly. The  US economy affects everyone from Americans in glitzy Manhattan skyscrapers to, quite literally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Behind-Beautiful-Forevers-Mumbai-Undercity\/dp\/081297932X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">garbage pickers living in developing nation slums<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t20006356nw7nor08b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But while Greece famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/23\/world\/europe\/greece-admits-faking-data-to-join-europe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">faked its way into the European Union<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/holders-argentina-15-billion-euro-gdp-warrants-file-us-recognition-english-2025-06-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Argentina to this day remains embroiled<\/a> in legal fights over its own sham numbers, there key differences here: The US economy is the world\u2019s biggest, buoyed by its global dominance and its years of strength.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t20007356n3cxunv4h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Trump administration says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/01\/business\/trump-job-report-number-fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">firing Erika McEntarfer<\/a> wasn\u2019t about politics but was instead about making BLS data more rigorous and accurate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t20008356nvfrlqi6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHistorically abnormal revisions in BLS data over the past few years since COVID have called into question the BLS\u2019s accuracy, reliability, and confidence. President Trump believes that businesses, households, and policymakers deserve accurate data to inform their decision-making, and he will restore America\u2019s trust in the BLS,\u201d said White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers in a statement to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t20009356nnka6agbj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, economists warn, the United States is at something of a crossroads now, waiting to see what happens to data series that economists have praised as the gold standard, even if many agree that model updating and modernization could make major improvements to the data\u2019s accuracy.<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000a356nnprbmk5n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s no substitute for credible government data,\u201d said Michael Heydt, the lead sovereign analyst at rating agency Morningstar DBRS.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Greece and Argentina<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000c356nz32d2d0q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2004, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/business\/4012869.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greece confessed it had faked numbers<\/a> on its national deficit and debt to qualify for entry into the eurozone in 2001.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000d356nko7qb3wz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the number-fudging didn\u2019t end there. Appointed to Greece\u2019s statistical agency in 2010, economist Andreas Georgiou made a bold decision: He worked to publish deficit numbers that aligned with reality. After years of untrustworthy numbers that made the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/greece-andreas-georgiou-elstat-by-convicting-an-honest-statistician-greece-condemns-itself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official Greek data a global punchline<\/a>, his efforts were downright startling. What followed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/greeces-response-to-its-resurgent-debt-crisis-prosecute-the-statistician-1486396434?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were years of legal fights<\/a>, and he was prosecuted for allegedly inflating the country\u2019s deficit figures. Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/33b0a48c-ff7e-11de-8f53-00144feabdc0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the EU itself condemned Greece<\/a> for the false data.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000e356n92x6e1jl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fakery made the effects of the global financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 significantly worse in Greece. Lenders, skittish of what Greece\u2019s actual public finances might be, shied away, demanding increasingly<strong> <\/strong>higher rates to hold Greek bonds. Austerity measures demanded by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to bail out Greece angered everyday citizens.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q15x0000356n1rlomtgy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pictures of Greeks rioting in the streets, burning cars and expressing their rage, underscored the dangers.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-102543993.jpg\" alt=\"Protesters clash with riot police during a demonstration in the center of Athens on February 24, 2010. Schools, government offices and courthouses were all closed while there was also major disruption to public transport, banks, hospitals and state-owned companies.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1331\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000f356ncbyw7kiv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Argentina, accusations of untrustworthy inflation and economic growth data have dogged <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD?locations=ZJ&amp;most_recent_value_desc=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latin America\u2019s third-largest economy<\/a> for decades, scaring off investors despite a wealth of natural resources. Then-President Nestor Kirchner demoted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2011-05-02\/argentina-firing-of-inflation-expert-signaled-start-of-dubious-price-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the person in charge of preparing inflation data<\/a> because she (correctly) reported surging prices in 2007. Everyone <a href=\"https:\/\/anderson-review.ucla.edu\/inflation-lies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from ordinary citizens<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/markets\/us\/argentine-inflation-data-questioned-even-after-reforms-idUSL2N0NR0QZ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">global investors<\/a> treated official inflation data as suspect for years after. <strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000g356nhz06ws8q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That contributed to the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitchratings.com\/entity\/argentina-80442219#ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credit ratings staying in junk territory<\/a> for years \u2013 one of the factors investors typically cite to charge a country more to loan it money. (In Argentina\u2019s case, previous sovereign defaults were also a major factor. The unreliable inflation data, after all, <a href=\"https:\/\/cepr.org\/voxeu\/columns\/when-did-argentina-lose-its-mojo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did not happen in a vacuum<\/a>.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmedaemk1001l356ngfqgnvjd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That matters to ordinary people because short- and long-term debt, whether from a federal government down to tiny cities and towns, can help fund everything from new schools to roads to essential services. When lenders turn off the money spigot \u2013 or charge dearly for access \u2013 that means regular people ultimately pay the price.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2022-07-29t000000z-1366206188-rc2plv9u1vhx-rtrmadp-3-argentina-economy.JPG\" alt=\"A one thousand Argentine peso bill is shown inside a store, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in July 2022.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1385\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000h356nfbsz6mbw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the United States is far from replicating either scenario, said Robert Shapiro, the chairman of economic advisory firm Sonecon and a former Under Secretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs under President Bill Clinton.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000i356nz2b6pjgb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the data was revealed to be fake in both Greece and Argentina, those economies were already in terrible shape, Shapiro pointed out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmedaigcw001o356nbxdovbs7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo the impact of the markets no longer being able to rely on the data was a little less because the markets were already backing away from investment and employment.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000j356n0f6ibl13@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US economy is growing, hitting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/30\/economy\/us-gdp-q2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a relatively robust annualized rate of 3%<\/a> in the second quarter. And at over $30 trillion, the US economy has a heft that both Greece and Argentina lack.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000k356ns08bwqci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re the largest economy in the world. We are by far the greatest financial center in the world,\u201d Shapiro said.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p>        A global standard<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000m356neolortwy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump fired Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, shortly after the August 1 jobs report showed sharply slower jobs growth than expected for July \u2013 and significant downward revisions to data from June and May. Trump accused McEntarfer, without evidence, of manipulating the reports for \u201cpolitical purposes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000n356n410lm0dk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Analysts begged to differ. The US is \u201ca world leader in providing high-quality data,\u201d Heydt said. \u201cThe BLS in particular is kind of a world class institution\u2026 The US for a long time has been kind of the gold standard for data.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000o356n97bhg86h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            William Beach, a former Trump BLS commissioner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/03\/politics\/video\/former-bureau-of-labor-statistics-commissioner-william-beach-slams-trump-on-firing-his-successor-no-grounds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told CNN previously that \u201cthere\u2019s no way\u201d<\/a> for McEntarfer or others to rig the data. \u201cBy the time the commissioner sees the number, they\u2019re all prepared, they\u2019re locked into the computer system,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no hands-on at all for the commissioner.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2228936724.jpg\" alt=\"The US Department of Labor headquarters in Washington, DC on Monday, August 11. A preliminary annual revision in August 2024, for example, showed the US economy had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/21\/economy\/bls-jobs-revisions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added 818,000 fewer jobs<\/a> over the past year than previously reported.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000q356nyx18wx0a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those kinds of large revisions might suggest deeper issues, like how the BLS gets their data and constructs their economic models, said Kathryn Rooney Vera, the chief market strategist and chief economist at financial services company StoneX.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000r356n9qylhlek@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSeveral economists and research teams I personally engage with have flagged these as structural issues with the data long before Trump\u2019s involvement or the firing of the BLS chief,\u201d Rooney Vera told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000s356noy05zjs5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Shapiro noted another wrinkle: budget cuts. Already the BLS has said it will cut back on collecting some data because it has fewer people. That, in turn, means it can take longer to get to final numbers for data releases.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000t356ncr01kda1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the case of the jobs report, big companies usually respond with information first. Smaller companies tend to trail. \u201cAnd so you get a lot of responses that come in after the date when the initial estimate is put out,\u201d he said, leading to revisions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000u356ngrwsnfsn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the US has other sources of data, both public and private, to round out a fuller picture of the economy. Shapiro pointed to the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmed8q7t2000v356nm51k9u58@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese institutions are made up virtually 100% by statisticians and economists,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cThey\u2019re utterly nonpolitical in their jobs.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Facebook Tweet Email Link Lying to your lenders is a bad enough idea when you\u2019re an individual.
