{"id":354735,"date":"2025-08-18T18:00:22","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T18:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/354735\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T18:00:22","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T18:00:22","slug":"work-to-start-on-six-new-metrolink-lines-covering-every-corner-of-greater-manchester-and-even-cheshire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/354735\/","title":{"rendered":"Work to start on SIX new Metrolink lines covering every corner of Greater Manchester &#8211; and even Cheshire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>But the projects will take a decade to come to fruition if everything goes to plan<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_190522trams6.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Work is starting on SIX new tram lines across Greater Manchester and out to mid-Cheshire just months <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/1000-more-electric-buses-three-31782197\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">after the government<\/a> approved <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/metrolink\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Metrolink<\/a> extensions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Chancellor confirmed the extensions to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/stockport\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Stockport<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/heywood\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Heywood<\/a> in June, alongside new tram stops at Sandhills in north Manchester, Elton Reservoir in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/bury\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bury<\/a>, and Cop Road in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oldham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oldham<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But it appears Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is not resting on its laurels, as a Bee Network committee report identified 15 \u2018candidates for new lines and extensions\u2019. Staff are set to start preparatory work on six new lines in the next year, it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">To see planning applications; traffic and road diversions and layout changes; and more, visit the Public Notices Portal <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/publicnoticeportal.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cNew lines and extensions are major projects,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWith the need for such schemes to develop strong business cases, identify and secure funding, undertake extensive community engagement and a full public consultation \u2013 and then complete detailed design and procure and mobilise contractors for construction, testing and commissioning \u2013 the timescale to the opening of any new line or extension is on the order of a decade (i.e. the opening date from now would be in the mid-2030s).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Screenshot-2025-08-18-141556.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: TfGM)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">TfGM will start work on a \u2018formal strategic outline case\u2019 for three new lines in autumn of 2025, all connected to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/manchester-airport\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester Airport<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Stockport to Airport (tram-train), building on Stockport-focussed strategic outlines case,<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Airport Western Leg (tram),<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Altrincham to the Airport\/potential links to mid-Cheshire (tram-train).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Work on a second strategic outline case will begin next summer on three lines focused on the north-west quarter of Greater Manchester, specifically:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Salford Quays to Salford Crescent (tram),<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">City centre to Salford Crescent (tram),<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Wigan via Atherton, Bolton options, Leigh options (tram\/tram-train).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If the lines become a reality, trams would run to every Greater Manchester borough for the first time in Metrolink\u2019s 33-year history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u2018Tram-trains\u2019 are not currently used in Greater Manchester, but are set to make their debut on the Heywood Metrolink extension. The technology sees \u2018tram-trains\u2019 use overhead wires on some sections of track, before switching to battery power on other stretches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">That is one reason why \u2018development work\u2019 is beginning on designing the \u2018next generation\u2019 of Metrolink vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Initial indications suggest the new vehicles will be 60m long, similar to the length of an existing \u2018double-tram\u2019.
