Cotham School said the letter, from an anonymous group calling itself \u2018Bristol Patriots\u2019 contained \u2018serious misinformation\u2019, made \u2018deeply concerning claims\u2019 and the school \u2018unequivocally rejects the divisive rhetoric and false claims\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Cotham School community &#8211; the headteacher, governors and parent-teacher organisation &#8211; decided to share a letter the school has received from \u2018Bristol Patriots\u2019 which criticised its work with City of Sanctuary. And in response, the school sent the group an open letter directly challenging its claims, and saying it was not only \u2018factually wrong\u2019 but also \u2018morally reprehensible\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The school received an unsigned letter from a group calling itself \u2018Bristol Patriots\u2019 &#8211; the group has a logo with a strapline \u2018We will not be silenced\u2019, showing an AI cartoon man and woman wearing Union flag t-shirts and one is carrying a megaphone with the other carrying a larger Union flag. The letter appears to be part of the latest far-right campaign focus, led by reports on right-wing media and social media about children writing letters to asylum seekers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The letter said it had \u2018come to our attention that your school\/nursery\/sixth form has established a connection and is working alongside City of Sanctuary UK\u2019. They are encouraging children to write Valentine\u2019s Day cards, love letters, and pledges to illegal migrants in the area\u2019, the letter claims. This letter is the beginning of the action we will be taking. Groups across the country are already exploring various ways to put a stop to this now\u2026\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The letter appears to be generic, and sent to schools across the country &#8211; all of whom, in England and Wales at least, are currently on their summer holiday. The leadership team at Cotham School, which boasts two former pupils who went on to win the Nobel Prize for physics, as well as TV presenter Maya Jama among its alumni, decided to speak out about the leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Headteacher Jo Butler said the description of City of Sanctuary and the school\u2019s work with City of Sanctuary was \u2018factually wrong\u2019. She said it \u2018contains serious misinformation about our educational partnerships and makes deeply concerning claims about refugee children and families in our community\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe unequivocally reject the divisive rhetoric and false claims made in this correspondence. This organisation supports schools in developing empathy, global citizenship, and understanding of displacement \u2013 vital skills for young people growing up in an interconnected world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cAny activities undertaken are age-appropriate, curriculum-linked, and designed to build understanding and kindness. The characterisation of refugees in the letter is factually wrong and morally reprehensible. Refugees are people who have fled persecution, war, and violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThey undergo extensive background checks and legal processes. To suggest that encouraging empathy toward displaced people constitutes &#8220;grooming&#8221; represents a profound misunderstanding of both safeguarding and basic human decency,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cEducation is about opening minds, building understanding, and preparing young people to be thoughtful citizens.
