target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">student visas<\/a> this year, a State Department official said Monday, as the Trump administration continues its crackdown on some international students it says have broken the law.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmehhd2m700053b6n4ftl709w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The visas were revoked because people had stayed after their visas expired or broken the law, the official said, noting that the \u201cvast majority\u201d of those legal violations were for cases of assault, driving under the influence, burglary, and \u201csupport for terrorism.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmehhd2m700063b6nrud5mx04@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to the official, approximately 4,000 of the 6,000 visas were revoked because the visa holders \u201cbroke the law.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmehhd2m700073b6nevkcz9oo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Approximately 200 to 300 of those visas were yanked for alleged terrorism under part of the Immigration and Nationality Act that says that foreign nationals may be inadmissible to the US \u201cdue to terrorist related activities.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmehhd2m700083b6nuubn4jx4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The thousands of revocations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/rubios-state-department-yanks-more-than-6k-student-visas-due-assault-burglary-support-terrorism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first reported<\/a> by Fox News, come as the Trump administration has undertaken aggressive actions towards universities and related to student visas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmehhd2m700093b6n3dc8axyi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Administration officials have particularly targeted international students active in protests against the war in Gaza, accusing those students of antisemitism and of supporting terrorism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmehhd2m7000a3b6nc9mt9dzg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In one high profile case, Tufts University PhD student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/09\/us\/rumeysa-ozturk-tufts-bail-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rumeysa Ozturk\u2019s visa<\/a> was canceled, and she was seized by masked federal agents in March and put into ICE detention. A judge ordered her release in May.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/still-21612938-16708-333-still.jpg\" alt=\"R\u00fcmeysa \u00d6zt\u00fcrk speaks to members of the press and others gathered outside the Louisiana detention center where she was held.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"900\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmehhd2m7000b3b6njfmtoht1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In June, the State Department told its embassies and consulates it must vet student visa applicants for \u201chostile attitudes towards our citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles.\u201d Applicants will be asked to set their social media profiles to public as part of the vetting, and a diplomatic cable noted that \u201climited access to, or visibility of, online presence could be construed as an effort to evade or hide certain activity.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmehhd2m7000c3b6n5uq62lmj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Secretary of State Marco Rubio has vigorously defended the Trump administration\u2019s policies on student visa revocation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmehhd2m7000d3b6n3qhvoeud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere is no constitutional right to a student visa. A student visa is something we decide to give you,\u201d he said in an interview with EWTN in early August. \u201cVisas of every kind are denied every day all over the world. As I speak to you now, someone\u2019s visa application to the US is being denied.
