Miguel Queipo, who is one half of the founding team of Amalia, said he takes hygiene \u201cvery seriously&#8221;, having<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/much-loved-italian-opening-new-28324256\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> been open for more than a decade in the heart of Liverpool.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Despite this, inspectors rated the Italian restaurant in Campbell Square with a zero-star rating following an inspection on Monday, June 16. At the time of the visit, it was said that \u201cmajor improvement\u201d was needed in all three key areas &#8211;<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/food-hygiene\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> hygienic food<\/a> handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/food-hygiene\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> management of food safety.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Miguel, who moved to England from Spain to study business, previously claimed the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/amalia-owner-regrets-cellar-issues-32077437\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">issues were \u201csorted out straight away\u201d.<\/a> Following a Freedom of Information request, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the ECHO<\/a> can reveal that \u201cevidence of mouse activity\u201d was noted in several spots throughout the venue<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">According to the report, this includes the back store, the landing, and the bar area. A \u201clow level\u201d of activity was also found in the kitchen. In light of this, the company was instructed to \u201cremove all mouse droppings\u201d and monitor for any new signs of activity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_JS313881655.jpg\" alt=\"Amalia Italian Restaurant has been crowned 'Best Pizza In England' at the English Italian Awards\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Amalia Italian Restaurant has previously been crowned &#8216;Best Pizza In England&#8217; at the English Italian Awards<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It was also asked to fill in holes and gaps throughout to prevent further pest access. Owner Miguel claims that all that the inspector asked has already been done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">told the ECHO<\/a>: \u201cWe were very disappointed to receive the zero\u2011rating, especially after more than a decade of operating without any similar issues. Amalia has always prided itself on delivering top\u2011quality food and maintaining impeccable standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cSince the inspection on June 16, when &#8216;major improvements necessary&#8217; were flagged in food handling, cleanliness and facilities, and food safety management, we have acted immediately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe addressed the concerns\u2014particularly the issue in the back cellar\u2014and have been in regular contact with the environmental health officers.
