Also, injuries suffered in a crash at that age could be more severe, leading to higher medical bills for insurers.”

There are some simple steps drivers can take to save money on their car insurance, no matter what their age.

It’s all about timing: Typically, the closer you get to your renewal date, the more expensive your premium is likely to be. Normally 15-24 days before your policy is due for renewal is when the prices are most competitive – drivers could save between 33-45% during this period

Reduce your mileage: If you only use your car occasionally, you could save money by taking out a low mileage or telematics policy. These tend to be cheaper as insurers will view people who spend less time on the road as being a lower risk. Make sure your mileage estimate is accurate, or it could void your cover altogether

Park in a safe place: Insurance providers consider where you park your car when assessing risk, so drivers should (where possible) make use of their garages or driveways for overnight parking. The safer you can park your car, the cheaper your premium is likely to be.

Pay annually if possible: Many insurers charge interest on monthly payments, so paying in one lump sum (if possible) will help you avoid these higher overall costs.

Always shop around: Never allow a policy to auto-renew without shopping around for a better deal first, always compare products, prices and be prepared to negotiate.

For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepage here and sign up to our daily newsletter here.

The figures come amid a new campaign aimed at raising awareness around fitness to drive, with a particular…

[5011
84491,299,390,378,1230,1144,88834,11191,16,10788,15
0":"post-355657","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-northern-ireland","8":"tag-department-for-infrastructure","9":"tag-europe","10":"tag-family","11":"tag-in-the-news","12":"tag-motoring","13":"tag-northern-ireland","14":"tag-northern-ireland-executive","15":"tag-stormont","16":"tag-uk","17":"tag-uk-government","18":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
