The EU executive is gearing up for a <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/196090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second major chipmaking support plan<\/a>, which will focus on chips powerful enough to train artificial intelligence models. \u201cAdvanced microchips are the essential building blocks of AI systems,\u201d Virkkunen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/henna-virkkunen_aicontinent-aicontinent-euchipsact-activity-7317586964080132096-BXIV?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAON984BQjNtoMTup3NvlThh8Ihxi0AWv5w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n<p>AI is currently \u201cthe driver of the market,\u201d ASML\u2019s Fouquet said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Orders for ASML\u2019s machines came in below analysts\u2019 expectations. ASML\u2019s share price was down roughly 5 percent in response to the disappointing results.<\/p>\n<p>ASML executives broke down several ways in which tariffs could impact the company: tariffs on entire machines shipped to the U.S., tariffs on parts and tools shipped to the U.S. for manufacturing, or retaliatory tariffs that other countries impose on the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Semiconductors have so far been exempted from targeted U.S. tariffs, amid a wider 90-day pause. <\/p>\n<p>Machines to produce chips were not granted an exemption, which could lead to hefty additional costs for manufacturers if tariffs kick in given the price tag for machines runs to hundreds of millions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On Monday, the European Commission\u2019s tech chief Henna Virkkunen visited ASML\u2019s headquarters in the Netherlands.
