An alternative view of the Premier League<\/a> table has emerged following the opening weekend of the new season.<\/p>\n

The 2025\/26 Premier League<\/a> campaign is officially underway with all 20 teams completing their opening fixture. Manchester United<\/a> were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal on Super Sunday while Manchester City<\/a> claimed a 4-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

There are still 37 rounds of fixtures to be played before the Premier League champions will be crowned. After just one round of matches, though, a table has emerged based on the expected goals for each team.<\/p>\n

Expected goals (xG) is calculated on the value of chances and shots on goal from each Premier League team and has become a popular metric by which to judge teams and performances. It is used to provide a number of goals that side, theoretically, should have scored.<\/p>\n

Liverpool<\/a> are top of the expected goals chart with 1.31 from their 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, as provided by FootyStats<\/a>. United are second in the table with 1.22 xG despite failing to get on the score sheet in their defeat to Arsenal at the weekend, with new signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha both having chances.<\/p>\n

The Gunners, who ran out narrow winners at Old Trafford<\/a> courtesy of Riccardo Calafiori’s goal from a corner, are 15th in the expected goals table with an xG of just 0.09. City, who put four goals past Wolves, have an xG of just 0.6, which puts them sixth in the standings and also behind Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Leeds have an xG of 0.95 after their 1-0 win over Everton on Monday night, while Tottenham’s xG is 0.79 after their 3-0 victory over Burnley. Chelsea, despite failing to score in a goalless draw with Crystal Palace, complete the top five with an expected goals of 0.77.<\/p>\n

United return to Premier League action this weekend when they travel to face Fulham at Craven Cottage, while City will travel to face Tottenham in North London.<\/p>\n
