{"id":356889,"date":"2025-08-19T13:25:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T13:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/356889\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T13:25:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T13:25:12","slug":"devil-comet-contains-strongest-evidence-yet-that-comets-delivered-water-to-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/356889\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Devil Comet&#8217; contains &#8216;strongest evidence yet&#8217; that comets delivered water to Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"a7c81e99-d8c3-4598-9e0e-eda6f4d96c91\">A &#8220;devil&#8221; comet&#8217;s water is strikingly similar to the water on Earth, researchers have discovered.<\/p>\n<p>The finding supports the idea that water was brought to our planet through <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comet<\/a> impacts, helping set the stage for life to evolve, the team reported Aug. 8 in the journal <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X1588396&amp;xcust=space_us_2864089162433352654&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41550-025-02614-7&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com%2Fastronomy%2Fcomets%2Fdevil-comet-contains-strongest-evidence-yet-that-comets-delivered-water-to-earth\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41550-025-02614-7\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" data-hl-processed=\"skimlinks\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X1588396&amp;xcust=hawk-custom-tracking&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41550-025-02614-7&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com%2Fastronomy%2Fcomets%2Fdevil-comet-contains-strongest-evidence-yet-that-comets-delivered-water-to-earth\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-merchant-name=\"nature.com\" data-merchant-network=\"SkimLinks\">Nature Astronomy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"a7c81e99-d8c3-4598-9e0e-eda6f4d96c91-2\">&#8220;Our new results provide the strongest evidence yet that at least some <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19878-halleys-comet.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19878-halleys-comet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halley<\/a>-type comets carried water with the same isotopic signature as that found on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>, supporting the idea that comets could have helped make our planet habitable,&#8221; NASA molecular astrophysicist Martin Cordiner, who led the team, said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/public.nrao.edu\/news\/comets-water-holds-clues-to-life-on-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/public.nrao.edu\/news\/comets-water-holds-clues-to-life-on-earth\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"a742dae2-918f-4a36-b9e1-a47dbe227de6\">The researchers made the discovery while observing a comet called 12P\/Pons-Brooks \u2014 also dubbed the &#8220;Devil Comet&#8221; \u2014 with the Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALMA<\/a>) and NASA&#8217;s Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/will-devil-comet-12p-pons-brooks-survive-close-encounter-sun\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/will-devil-comet-12p-pons-brooks-survive-close-encounter-sun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comet 12P\/Pons-Brooks<\/a> is a Halley-type comet, a class of comets with orbital periods between 20 and 200 years.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used ALMA and IRTF data to analyze the ratio of deuterium (&#8220;heavy&#8221; hydrogen, which has a neutron in its nucleus) to normal hydrogen (D\/H) \u2014 a &#8220;chemical fingerprint&#8221; that can be used to trace the water&#8217;s origins \u2014 in the water on Comet 12P\/Pons-Brooks. They found that the comet&#8217;s water is &#8220;virtually indistinguishable&#8221; from the water on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially significant because previous measurements of the water on Halley-type comets revealed different D\/H ratios, casting doubt on the theory that comets could have brought water to Earth. The team studied both ordinary water (H2O) and &#8220;heavy&#8221; water (HDO), which contains deuterium.
