{"id":357097,"date":"2025-08-19T15:15:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T15:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/357097\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T15:15:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T15:15:08","slug":"donald-trump-says-us-could-play-role-by-air-in-ukraine-security-guarantee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/357097\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump says US could play role \u2018by air\u2019 in Ukraine security guarantee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Donald Trump has said that the US could play a role \u201cby air\u201d in a postwar security guarantee for Ukraine, as he warned Vladimir Putin that he would face a \u201crough situation\u201d if he did not co-operate on a peace deal.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking the morning after White House meetings with the Ukrainian president and European leaders, the US president told Fox News that American forces could assist Ukraine\u2019s allies in deterring future Russian attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to security, [the\u00a0Europeans are] willing to put people on the ground,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re willing to help them with things, especially, probably talk about by air, because there\u2019s nobody [who has the] kind of stuff we have,\u201d he added. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to be a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was unclear whether Trump was referring to the use of fighter jets or capabilities such as airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the US president had said that \u201cEuropean nations are going to take a lot of the burden\u201d of securing Ukraine, adding: \u201cWe\u2019re going to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question of security guarantees is one of several that remain unresolved after the high-profile\u00a0White House summit and a meeting between Trump and Putin, the Russian president, in Alaska last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Ukraine] is not going to be a part of Nato, but we\u2019ve got the European nations, and they\u2019ll frontload it,\u201d Trump said, mentioning France, Germany and the UK. <\/p>\n<p>Russia has consistently said it will not accept any western troop presence in Ukraine, and repeated that stance on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Trump also said on Tuesday that the US was setting up a bilateral meeting between Putin and Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss ending the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/war-in-ukraine\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conflict<\/a>, though the Kremlin has yet to agree publicly to any such summit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Putin is tired of it. I think they\u2019re all tired of it,\u201d he added. \u201cBut you never know. We\u2019re going to find out about President Putin in the next couple of weeks. It\u2019s possible he does not want to make a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump added that after an initial Putin-Zelenskyy meeting, he was prepared to attend a trilateral meeting with both leaders to conclude an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that President Putin will be good, and if he is not, it is going to be a rough situation and I hope President Zelenskyy is going to show flexibility as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov avoided a question on whether Putin had agreed to meet Zelenskyy, saying any top-level meeting with Ukraine had to be \u201cprepared extremely carefully\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Lavrov told state television Russia \u201cis not rejecting any forms of work, neither bilateral nor trilateral\u201d but insisted that summits required \u201cstep-by-step gradual preparation, starting with the expert level and thereafter going through all the required steps\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>European leaders, who have been coaching the Ukrainian president on handling Trump since a disastrous\u00a0meeting in the Oval Office in February, are keen that if the meeting does not happen, the blame \u2014 in Trump\u2019s eyes \u2014 falls solely on Putin.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission said it welcomed \u201cthat President Putin has changed his mind on bilateral talks with President Zelenskyy\u201d and that governments on the continent would help to prepare the summit.<\/p>\n<p>UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said on X that there would \u201cnow be a bilateral meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy\u201d followed by a trilateral meeting including Trump.<\/p>\n<p>But some officials have doubts Putin will follow through on meeting Zelenskyy soon. <\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy\u00a0said on Monday after leaving the Oval Office that he was open to \u201cany format\u201d of meeting Putin, a statement that puts the onus on the Russian president.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He posted on Tuesday that governments were \u201calready working on the concrete content of the security guarantees\u201d and that national security advisers were in \u201cconstant contact\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>A further meeting of the group of leaders, including those from Germany, France, Italy and Finland, who were present at the White House would take place once the details of the security guarantees had been fleshed out, officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title o3-type-body-highlight\">Recommended<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a480b1f5-6889-4f22-952e-3df56bc3e2e8\" data-trackable=\"image-link\" data-trackable-context-story-link=\"image-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"o-teaser__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2F__origami%2Fservice%2Fimage%2Fv2%2Fimages%2Fraw%2Fhttps%253A%252F%252Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net%252Fproduction%252F9419c9a7-0b93-4da9-a6dd-ebe72474258a.jpg%3Fsource%3Dnext-article%26fit%3Dscale-down%26quality%3Dhighest%26width%3D700%26dpr%3D1?source=next&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;dpr=2&amp;width=240\" alt=\"US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pose for a picture with European leaders following a meeting in the Oval Office at the White House on August 18 2025 in Washington\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the European leaders\u2019 push for the guarantees, Trump said there would be no American \u201cboots on the ground\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Another sticking point in the peace negotiations is Russia\u2019s demand that Ukraine cede territory in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in exchange for freezing the front line in southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. However, Kyiv has insisted it will not surrender any territory.<\/p>\n<p>At the White House on Monday, Zelenskyy and the Europeans likened giving away the remainder of the Donetsk region to Trump giving away eastern Florida, according to two people familiar with the matter.
