This water absorbs solar radiation, stores or redistributes heat through the building&#8217;s mechanical systems, and helps stabilize interior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/temperature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temperatures<\/a>. Rather than relying on static <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/insulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insulation<\/a> to resist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy<\/a> transfer, Water-Filled Glass works through continuous thermal exchange. The principle recalls the thermal control methods used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/aerospace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aerospace<\/a>, where movement and redistribution maintain equilibrium.<\/p>\n<p>The concept was initiated by Dr. M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Gutai at The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/university-of-tokyo\/page\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Tokyo<\/a>, under Professors Kazuhiko Namba and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/kengo-kuma\/page\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kengo Kuma<\/a>, and has since been furthered by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/multidisciplinary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multidisciplinary<\/a> team including Hydro Building Systems. Research has focused not only on the performance of the panels but also on potential applications within existing building stock. One of the system&#8217;s key proposed uses is in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/retrofit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retrofitting<\/a>. Installed as a secondary skin, Water-Filled Glass can reduce operational <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy<\/a> demands with limited disruption to occupants or structure.
