Resorts and convention centers report fewer visitors this year, especially from overseas &#8211;\u00a0and some are pointing the finger at President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs and immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n<p>In June, just under 3.1 million tourists visited Vegas &#8211;\u00a0an 11% drop from the same month last year. International travel was down 13%, and hotel occupancy sank nearly 15%, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Shelley Berkley says tourism from Canada &#8211;\u00a0Nevada\u2019s biggest foreign market &#8211;\u00a0has collapsed from a \u201ctorrent to a drip.\u201d Mexico isn\u2019t far behind. \u201cHigh rollers from Mexico just aren\u2019t coming anymore,\u201d she told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Union leader Ted Pappageorge called it the \u201cTrump slump,\u201d arguing that the administration\u2019s hostile stance on immigration has scared away both international travelers and Latinos from nearby California. \u201cIf you tell the rest of the world they\u2019re not welcome, then they won\u2019t come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The downturn mirrors a national trend. Tourism Economics slashed its 2025 outlook from predicting growth to forecasting a 9.4% decline in international arrivals. Canada, once America\u2019s top source of tourists, is showing some of the steepest drops.<\/p>\n<p>Airline data backs it up: in June, Air Canada passenger numbers into Vegas fell 33%, WestJet 31%, and budget carrier Flair an eye-popping 62%. Canadian travel agents blame politics, rising costs, and even \u201cnational pride\u201d after Trump suggested making Canada the 51st U.S. state.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Vegas isn\u2019t folding. Circa Resort &amp; Casino CEO Derek Stevens admits foreign visitors are down, but insists \u201cthe sky\u2019s not falling.\u201d Wealthier guests are still spending big on gaming, and package deals are helping fill some gaps.<\/p>\n<p>Off the Strip, the Pinball Museum remains \u201crecession-proof.\u201d Manager Jim Arnold jokes their strategy is to \u201cignore inflation.\u201d Quarter-a-play machines, free admission, and no resort fees keep visitors streaming in.<\/p>\n<p>But critics warn rising prices across high-end resorts and restaurants are driving away middle-class tourists. \u201cPeople feel nickeled and dimed,\u201d Mayor Berkley admitted, urging businesses to make Vegas more affordable again.<\/p>\n<p>Vegas slipped from No. 6 to No. 10 on AAA\u2019s Labor Day travel list this year \u2014 but true to form, the city insists it\u2019s just a dip, not a downfall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Las Vegas, the city of neon lights and never-ending parties, is seeing its summer crowds thin out.
