{"id":358822,"date":"2025-08-20T07:12:21","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T07:12:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/358822\/"},"modified":"2025-08-20T07:12:21","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T07:12:21","slug":"brent-east-mp-dawn-butler-confirms-bid-to-be-london-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/358822\/","title":{"rendered":"Brent East MP Dawn Butler confirms bid to be London mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The former shadow equalities minister revealed she would run in the 2028 mayoral race if the current mayor decides not to seek a fourth term.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Butler, who first entered Parliament in 2005, has already begun sharing videos highlighting issues across the capital, including in Notting Hill and Canary Wharf.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  During an appearance on The Mirror\u2019s web series Party Games, Ms Butler said: &#8220;London Mayor, to represent London.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I\u2019m a Londoner through and through, born in east London.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Just having London the way I have experienced it and seen it and just making London wonderful for everyone and everyone being proud of London and being a Londoner.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Yeah, I\u2019d love to be a Mayor of London.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  When pressed on whether she would run in 2028, she said: &#8220;Once there\u2019s a vacancy, I will pop my hat in the ring.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Her comments come amid speculation over whether Sir Sadiq Khan, who recently won a historic third term, will stand again.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A City Hall spokesman said: &#8220;Sadiq hasn\u2019t decided yet if he\u2019s standing again at the next mayoral election.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;This is the same as the last election cycle when he didn\u2019t announce his decision until much later in the mayoral term.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Butler is among several Labour figures tipped as potential candidates, alongside Tooting MP Rosena Allin-Khan, Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy, and Vauxhall MP Florence Eshalomi.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Labour is reportedly considering high-profile names such as actor Idris Elba and Dragon\u2019s Den investor Deborah Meaden.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Speculation on the Conservative side includes ex-Olympian Sebastian Coe and former London minister Paul Scully.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Reform UK is believed to be weighing up Laila Cunningham as a candidate, despite earlier suggestions of former soldier Ant Middleton.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Recent Savanta polling puts Labour on 35 per cent, 12 points ahead of the Conservatives on 23 per cent.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Liberal Democrats and Reform UK are tied at 14 per cent, with the Greens on 11 per cent.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alternative polling from Find Out Now suggests Reform UK could reach 20 per cent, putting them in joint second with the Tories.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The former shadow equalities minister revealed she would run in the 2028 mayoral race if the current mayor&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":358823,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7757],"tags":[748,393,4884,257,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-358822","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-london","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-england","10":"tag-great-britain","11":"tag-london","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115059854189648075","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/358822","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=358822"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/358822\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/358823"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=358822"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=358822"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=358822"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
