href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-transport-minister-blasted-over-autobahn-toll-debacle\/a-51773179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andreas Scheuer<\/a>, who was federal minister of transportation and digital infrastructure from 2018 to 2021, has confirmed media reports that he has been charged with making a false statement to the Bundestag, Germany&#8217;s lower house of parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Scheuer is a member of the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/christian-social-union-csu\/t-17439619\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian Social Union<\/a> (CSU), the Bavarian sister party to the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/christian-democratic-union-cdu\/t-17351950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian Democratic Union<\/a> (CDU), the conservative party of current Chancellor <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/friedrich-merz\/t-60575802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friedrich Merz<\/a> as well as former longtime Chancellor <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/angela-merkel\/t-17280098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angela Merkel.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it was under Merkel that Scheuer served as a Cabinet member, handling the final stages of Merkel&#8217;s <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/tolls-on-the-autobahn-germany-counts-cost-of-failed-plan\/a-49345719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ill-fated attempt<\/a> to introduce tolls on Germany&#8217;s highways.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-opposition-demand-bungled-toll-contract-details\/a-49316468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An extremely unpopular proposal<\/a> both at home and abroad, Scheuer is accused of lying to the Bundestag about having signed a contract with a company to run the toll operations despite knowing that the European Court of Justice\u00a0was likely to <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/eu-court-rules-against-autobahn-tolls\/a-49243318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declare the
