At that time, UK Government Minister Pat McFadden authorised the alert to issue urgent safety warnings as red weather alerts were in place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-lqx5a760\">Around 4.5 million mobile phones received the message \u2013 the largest-ever live activation of the system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-4s1kv13\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\">Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland<\/strong>, said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-q0ajk16\">\u201cWe saw the Emergency Alert system\u2019s value first-hand during Storm \u00c9owyn in January and this test will be important in making sure we are prepared for future emergencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-4drt0873\">\u201cWe need to ensure the system is working effectively so people in Northern Ireland get critical information when lives are on the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight:700\">What to expect on 7 September<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight:700\">Background: Storm \u00c9owyn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-ehn3b43\">Storm \u00c9owyn, an intense extratropical cyclone, struck Northern Ireland on Friday 24 January 2025. A rare red wind warning was issued by the Met Office for the entire region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-ulwl81401\">The Emergency Alert was broadcast at around 6pm on 23 January, warning of a threat to life and urging residents to remain indoors.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight:700\">Public awareness campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-lo97i51\">Ahead of the September test, the government has launched a public information campaign to ensure people are aware it is taking place. The campaign includes communications for vulnerable groups, such as victims of domestic abuse, and features the first national information video in British Sign Language.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-zp2zw54\">The full text of the test message has also been revealed, stating:<\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-9jjp257\">\u201cThis is a test of Emergency Alerts, a UK government service that will warn you if there\u2019s a life-threatening emergency nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pQuHl TfvTg z3yvg logrL\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-nxbza59\">\u201cYou do not need to take any action.
