{"id":359409,"date":"2025-08-20T12:30:35","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T12:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/359409\/"},"modified":"2025-08-20T12:30:35","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T12:30:35","slug":"striking-red-steelwork-marks-transformation-of-1960s-liechtenstein-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/359409\/","title":{"rendered":"Striking red steelwork marks transformation of 1960s Liechtenstein home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio Dominic Spalt Architektur has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/renovations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">renovated<\/a> a 1960s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">house<\/a> to create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/multi-generational-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multi-generational home<\/a> characterised by red <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/steel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steelwork<\/a> elements in Schaan, Liechtenstein. <\/p>\n<p>The studio sought to transform Number 7 Bretscha through &#8220;minimal but precise interventions&#8221; that respect the existing structure while facilitating its use by three generations of the same family \u2013 parents, children and a grandmother.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2237217\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bretscha-dominic-spalt-house-renovation-liechtenstein-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Two residential units connected by red steel staircase and balcony\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Dominic Spalt Architektur has renovated a 1960s house in Liechtenstein<\/p>\n<p>Contrasted against the white facade, a red steel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/spiral-staircases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spiral staircase<\/a> to the south of the property leads up to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/balconies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">balcony<\/a> framed by scaffolding-like beams and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/corrugated-metal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corrugated<\/a> iron roof.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The scaffolding in front of the balcony connects the house to the garden,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/dominicspalt.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dominic Spalt Architektur<\/a> founder Dominic Spalt told Dezeen. &#8220;With its plants, it acts as a green filter for the rooms behind it, while also forming a new garden facade.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2237219 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bretscha-dominic-spalt-house-renovation-liechtenstein-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_24-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Residential unit leading out to balcony in multigenerational family home\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Number 7 Bretscha was designed to be a multi-generational family home<\/p>\n<p>In order to accommodate the three generations who live in the house, the studio created two separate apartments on top of one another, connected by an internal staircase.<\/p>\n<p>The lower-level residential unit, which is occupied by the grandmother and accessed via the garden, remains largely unchanged except for adjustments to colour accents and new openings for pipes.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, in the unit intended for the parents and their children, a series of simple alterations were made to the bedrooms and a dividing wall was removed to allow for direct access to the bathroom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2237252\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bretscha-dominic-spalt-house-renovation-liechtenstein-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Red steel staircase leading to upper level apartment \" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Striking red steelwork marks the transformation of the home<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the property, a set of red steel stairs emerging from two large overlapping stones serves as a separate entrance to the upper apartment and shared living space.<\/p>\n<p>Dominic Spalt Architektur created a large, open-plan living space, which includes a kitchen, living room and mezzanine, in the former attic for all of the family to use.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/04\/23\/archmongers-elemental-house-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/elemental-house-archmongers-architecture-residential-london-jim-stephenson_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jp.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Elemental House by Archmongers\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Archmongers revamps 1970s London home with rough concrete and red steel\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Windows were carefully positioned to allow natural light into the space and to frame views of both the garden and the Drei Schwestern mountain range.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One focus was on preserving the garden, and the spatial integration of a forty-year-old tree,&#8221; said Spalt. &#8220;The new living space now opens onto the garden and provides a direct connection to the treetop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2237255\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bretscha-dominic-spalt-house-renovation-liechtenstein-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_19-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Attic conversion housing living room\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The original attic was converted into an open-plan living space<\/p>\n<p>By replacing the pitched roof of an existing single-storey extension with a flat roof, the studio created a terrace which can be accessed via a large sliding window from the upstairs living space.<\/p>\n<p>A red steel geometric pergola frames the terrace, while also providing a structure for plants to grow around.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The structure with the gabled roofs was intended as a spatial enclosure for the terrace, which will gradually become overgrown with plants,&#8221; Spalt said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2237254\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bretscha-dominic-spalt-house-renovation-liechtenstein-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Geometric red steel pergola \" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A geometric steel structure sits on top of a single-storey terrace<\/p>\n<p>A simple material palette was used throughout the interior, with industrially manufactured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/plywood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plywood<\/a> panels lining the walls and ceilings.
