The Cure<\/a> have teased an upcoming announcement with a cryptic social media post that has left fans speculating.<\/p>\n

On Friday (April 18), the band posted a pair of images of an iPod sitting in a recording studio, one showing \u2018CURE MOALW\u2019 on the back of it and the other showing a playlist of tracks involving the band.<\/p>\n

Also included in the post is a 14 second video of mysterious, ambient music, while the post is captioned: \u201cIV-XXI-MMXXV\u201d. That appears to reference the date of April 21, 2025, which presumably will be the day the full announcement arrives. It also happens to be the 66th birthday of frontman Robert Smith<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the confirmation of what the announcement could be, fans have been posting their theories online. \u201c04\/21\/2025 ?!? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN,\u201d reads one reply to the band\u2019s post on X.<\/p>\n

Much of the speculation revolves around the relevance of the \u2018MOALW\u2019 abbreviation on the back of the iPod, with various X users suggesting \u201cMovie of a Lost World\u201d or \u201cMixes of a Lost World\u201d. These point to a spin-off from The Cure\u2019s 2024 album \u2018Songs Of A Lost World<\/a>\u2019, their first studio record in 16 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew album!?\u201d reads another reply to the post, while another speculates that it is teasing a new tour from the band. See a range of reactions below.<\/p>\n

The band have spoken about the possibility of a new album in recent months<\/a>, telling Radio X that their next body of work \u201chas a couple of songs that we were playing live which didn\u2019t make it onto \u2018Songs Of A Lost World\u2019 and it has some completely new stuff that no one\u2019s ever heard.\u201c<\/p>\n

In the same interview, Smith revealed that he is \u201calready finishing\u201d the band\u2019s next album and teased that it can potentially receive a release as early as this summer<\/a>. He also added that it includes \u201cthe saddest song\u201d of their recent batch.<\/p>\n

As well as the follow-up to \u2018Songs Of A Lost World\u2019, he has also previously said that\u00a0there\u2019s a third album on the way which is \u201ccompletely different\u201d<\/a>. Speaking to\u00a0Absolute Radio\u2019s Danielle Perry, Smith explained: \u201cIt\u2019s really kind of random stuff, like late-night studio stuff. But some of it is really good actually, it\u2019s just very very different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Songs Of A Lost World\u2019 saw The Cure land a Number One album in the UK for the first time in 32 years<\/a>, and it earned a five-star review from NME<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was also included in\u00a0NME\u2019s list of Best Albums Of The Year<\/a>, while lead single \u2018Alone\u2019 starred in\u00a0NME\u2019s Best Songs Of 2024<\/a>. \u201c\u2018Alone\u2019 ended a 16-year drought and proved The Cure haven\u2019t lost any of their magic. Through swirling synths and cinematic instrumentation, paired with Robert Smith\u2019s poignant lyricism and melodies, this epic is a masterwork of ethereal beauty and raw emotional depth,\u201d the latter read. \u201cOne of their most captivating songs to date.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Smith has been announced as the curator for the 2026 edition of the Teenage Cancer Trust gig series<\/a>, replacing The Who<\/a>\u2019s Roger Daltrey<\/a>.<\/p>\n
