NATO<\/a> defense chiefs held a \u201ccandid discussion\u201d Wednesday about what security guarantees they could offer Kyiv to help forge a peace agreement that ends\u00a0Russia\u2019s three-year war on Ukraine<\/a>, a senior alliance official said.<\/p>\n

Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the chair of NATO\u2019s Military Committee, said that 32 defense chiefs from across the alliance held a video conference amid a\u00a0U.S.-led diplomatic push\u00a0to end the fighting.<\/p>\n

He said there was a \u201cgreat, candid discussion\u201d in the call. \u201cI thanked everyone for their always proactive participation in these meetings: we are united, and that unity was truly tangible today, as always,\u201d he wrote on social platform X without providing further details.<\/p>\n

U.S. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, NATO\u2019s supreme allied commander Europe, took part in the virtual talks, Dragone said. U.S. Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was also due to participate, a U.S. defense official said.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s chief of the defence staff Gen. Jennie Carignan participated virtually, the Department of National Defence told Global News, along with Col. Francois Chamberland, who serves as Canada\u2019s deputy military representative at NATO.<\/p>\n

Assurances that it won\u2019t be invaded again in the future are one of the keys for getting Ukraine to sign up for a peace deal with Russia. It wants Western help for its military, including weapons and training, to shore up its defenses, and Western officials are scrambling to figure out what commitments they might offer.<\/p>\n

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov chided efforts to work on security arrangements in Ukraine without Moscow\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot agree with the fact that it is now proposed to resolve collective security issues without the Russian Federation. This will not work,\u201d Lavrov said Wednesday, according to state news agency RIA Novosti.<\/p>\n

Russia will \u201censure (its) legitimate interests firmly and harshly,\u201d Lavrov added at a news conference in Moscow with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi.<\/p>\n

Caine also met with European military chiefs Tuesday evening in Washington to assess the best military options for political leaders, according to the defense official, who wasn\u2019t authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0is trying to steer\u00a0Putin\u00a0and Zelenskyy toward a settlement more than three years after Russia invaded its neighbor, but there are\u00a0major obstacles. They include Ukraine\u2019s demands for Western-backed military assurances to ensure Russia won\u2019t mount another invasion in the coming years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need strong security guarantees to ensure a truly secure and lasting peace,\u201d Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post Wednesday after Russian missile and drone strikes hit six regions of Ukraine overnight.<\/p>\n

Kyiv\u2019s European allies are\u00a0looking to set up a force\u00a0that could backstop any peace agreement, and a\u00a0coalition of 30 countries, including European nations, Japan and Australia, has signed up to support the initiative.<\/p>\n

Military chiefs are figuring out how that security force might work. The role that the U.S. might play is unclear.\u00a0Trump\u00a0on Tuesday\u00a0ruled out\u00a0sending U.S. troops to help defend Ukraine against Russia.<\/p>\n
