{"id":361833,"date":"2025-08-21T10:32:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T10:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/361833\/"},"modified":"2025-08-21T10:32:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T10:32:15","slug":"travelodge-weighed-down-by-weaker-london-demand-and-surging-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/361833\/","title":{"rendered":"Travelodge weighed down by weaker London demand and surging costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The hotel group also revealed a dip in revenues but bosses said it reflected a \u201csolid\u201d half-year in the face of \u201cchallenging\u201d market conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The firm, which operates about 610 hotels, saw revenues slip by 3.2% to \u00a3471.3 million for the six months to June 30, compared with the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>Travelodge said this was linked to \u201csofter market demand, particularly in Greater London\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Bosses said the group was impacted by a quieter events schedule over the first half of the year, despite boosts from the Six Nations Rugby, Radio One Weekend in Liverpool and the Grand National over the first half.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive Jo Boydell told the PA news agency has already seen a benefit from events in the second half of 2025, including from Oasis\u2019 reunion gigs, Coldplay concerts and bookings for the Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The hospitality company said it has seen \u201cimproved trading conditions\u201d in recent weeks, with revenues up 4% year-on-year for the third quarter of 2025 to date.<\/p>\n<p>This has been supported by \u201csolid\u201d trading in London and the regions, as well as positive forward booking.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as Travelodge pushes forward with a major development programme which saw it open 11 new hotels so far this year, with at least nine more expected by the end of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, it also reported earnings of \u00a347.3 million for the half-year, sliding from \u00a382.1 million a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Travelodge said this was linked to the fall in UK revenues and industry-wide cost inflation.<\/p>\n<p>It also came under pressure from a jump in labour costs linked to the Government\u2019s previous autumn budget, with increases to the national minimum wage and national insurance contributions (Nics) coming into force in April.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Boydell said: \u201cDemand was softer in the first half, particularly in Greater London, and event phasing has shifted more activity into the second half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfits were impacted by approximately \u00a320 million of inflationary cost increases, including around \u00a39 million from national living wage uplifts and additional national insurance costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite these headwinds, our diversified business and leisure customer base supported strong occupancy of over 82%, and the performance of our Spanish business was a particular highlight, delivering strong revenue and profit growth.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The hotel group also revealed a dip in revenues but bosses said it reflected a \u201csolid\u201d half-year in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":361834,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7757],"tags":[748,393,4884,257,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-361833","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-london","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-england","10":"tag-great-britain","11":"tag-london","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115066302966595600","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/361833","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=361833"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/361833\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/361834"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=361833"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=361833"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=361833"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
