Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has opened up on a ‘difficult’ period in his life after signing for Hull City on a free transfer.<\/p>\n
Williams came through the United youth set-up and made 51 appearances for the first team. The former England under-21 international spent loan spells away from Old Trafford<\/a> with Norwich City and Ipswich Town but his career was turned upside down two years ago.<\/p>\n Williams was involved in a high-speed car crash. Thankfully there were no fatalities or serious injuries caused by the incident.<\/p>\n The 24-year-old was handed a 14-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, a three-year driving ban, and a significant amount of community service in May at Chester Crown Court.<\/p>\n After being released by United last summer, Williams last played a competitive match back in December 2023 and his career was in jeopardy.<\/p>\n He has been handed a lifeline by the Tigers after impressing on trial, signing an initial one-year contract at the MKM Stadium with the option of a further year.<\/p>\n And after being given a second chance in football, Williams is determined to pay back the people he has ‘let down’ as he reflected on the mistakes he has made in the past.<\/p>\n “It was just a learning process. Things did happen, but like I said, I’ve learned from them now,” Williams told Hull Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n “I’m growing up now, I’m not a young player no more. I’m becoming one of the senior players in the squad as well, so it’s important for me to help the young players as well because I know how difficult it is.<\/p>\n “It was difficult because everyone kind of forgot what I actually achieved; people don’t understand that. I didn’t even understand at the time what I’ve actually achieved (playing for Manchester United<\/a> at such a young age).<\/p>\n “There are a lot of people in the world who would wish that for their child or something like that. It was upsetting that I’ve let a lot of people down; it’s for me to get things right now. Like, I’ve always said as well, I don’t want any sympathy from anyone.<\/p>\n “It was my actions; I took responsibility for them. I’ve apologised, and all I can do now is just focus on my football and get things right on the pitch, and I’m sure that people will appreciate that.”<\/p>\n Williams is in line to make his Hull debut this weekend when they take on Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.<\/p>\n
