{"id":363243,"date":"2025-08-21T23:14:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T23:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/363243\/"},"modified":"2025-08-21T23:14:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T23:14:13","slug":"european-greens-urge-eu-to-act-after-continued-inaction-on-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/363243\/","title":{"rendered":"European Greens urge EU to act after &#8216;continued inaction&#8217; on Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>LONDON <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Greens\/EFA group in the European Parliament on Thursday voiced alarm over the EU\u2019s \u201ccontinued inaction\u201d on Gaza and urged top officials to act urgently to uphold international law.<\/p>\n<p>In an open letter to European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the EU\u2019s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, the group expressed \u201cdeep concern\u201d over the bloc\u2019s inadequate response \u201cin the face of the catastrophic situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recalling the worsening humanitarian crisis, where hunger is being used as \u201ca method of war,\u201d the Greens said Israel is advancing plans to expel Gaza\u2019s entire population and occupy the territory \u201cin clear violation of international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis situation can no longer be regarded as a mere emergency: there is clear evidence that a genocide is being committed in Gaza,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>The group accused EU leaders of failing to respond \u201cwith the urgency and resolve that our treaties, values and responsibilities demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8216;We cannot afford more delay&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Criticizing that the EU\u2019s association agreement with Israel still remains in force, with no arms embargo or sanctions imposed, they warned the bloc\u2019s moral standing is \u201cgrowing weaker by the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe European Parliament has consistently demanded decisive action. Now is the time to respond,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>The Greens\/EFA urged EU chiefs to immediately suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, terminate Horizon Europe research projects, and adopt targeted sanctions against Israeli authorities. They also called for unhindered humanitarian access and full reinstatement of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA)\u2019s mandate and funding.<\/p>\n<p>The letter asked EU leaders to reaffirm their commitment to a two-state solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict, with \u201cconcrete political steps\u201d ahead of the UN General Assembly in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot afford more delay. We cannot afford more bloodshed.
