{"id":363455,"date":"2025-08-22T01:18:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T01:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/363455\/"},"modified":"2025-08-22T01:18:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T01:18:20","slug":"time-up-for-glasgow-office-block-as-student-housing-goes-through-the-roof-august-2025-news-architecture-in-profile-the-building-environment-in-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/363455\/","title":{"rendered":"Time up for Glasgow office block as student housing goes through the roof : August 2025 : News : Architecture in profile the building environment in Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>August 21 2025<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbanrealm.com\/images\/news\/news_11581.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-urban noopener\" title=\"Time up for Glasgow office block as student housing goes through the roof\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/a3217a149be8083c94d674d8fec7ba1a.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" alt=\"Time up for Glasgow office block as student housing goes through the roof\" title=\"Time up for Glasgow office block as student housing goes through the roof\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>A defunct city centre office block is to give way to yet more student flats under detailed proposals submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/publicaccess.glasgow.gov.uk\/online-applications\/applicationDetails.do?keyVal=SZSK0EEXG4N00&amp;activeTab=summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russ Drage Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbanrealm.com\/news\/11511\/Student_flats_preview_spells_the_end_for_obsolescent_offices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier consultations<\/a>, the architects have returned with plans to replace the block with a 14-storey structure containing 259 student beds along with associated amenity areas and rooftop gardens.<\/p>\n<p>Adjoining the recently completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbanrealm.com\/news\/10010\/Glasgow%27s_newest_office_block_touts_its_sustainability_%26_digital_credentials.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cadworks<\/a> building, the development will address a prominent corner in the grid-iron CBD with a more exuberant crown inspired by the elaborate office building which occupied the site until the 1980s. Taking the form of a zinc mansard roof, the crown is topped by an outdoor roof terrace accessible from the main stair and lift core.<\/p>\n<p>In their design statement, the architects wrote: &#8220;The result is both a nod to the chateau-style roofed building that originally occupied the site of 38 Cadogan Street, and the civic pride of the magnificent headquarters buildings constructed by Glasgow&#8217;s merchants and businessmen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sitting on a 2.5m plinth with glazed openings set between square columns clad in reconstituted stone panels.
