{"id":364626,"date":"2025-08-22T12:28:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T12:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/364626\/"},"modified":"2025-08-22T12:28:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T12:28:14","slug":"ney-and-partners-curves-footbridge-between-arches-of-french-viaduct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/364626\/","title":{"rendered":"Ney and Partners curves footbridge between arches of French viaduct"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Belgian engineering studio Ney and Partners has created a sinuous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/footbridges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">footbridge<\/a>\u00a0in Albi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France<\/a>, which cantilevers from a 19th-century viaduct over the River Tarn.<\/p>\n<p>Made from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/steel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steel<\/a>, the pedestrian and bicycle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bridges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bridge<\/a> is straight along one side, while the other side meanders in a waving pattern between the 4.7 metre-wide arches of the brick railway viaduct.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2238857 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/albi-footbridge-ney-and-partners-france_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x638.jpg\" alt=\"Albi footbridge built on a viaduct by New and Partners\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1770\"  \/>Ney and Partners has built a sinuous footbridge in Albi<\/p>\n<p>Curving to 7.5 metres at the widest points, <a href=\"https:\/\/ney.partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ney and Partners<\/a> added seating to the bridge to create balcony-like spaces with views across the river.<\/p>\n<p>Influenced by the geometry of the viaduct and its seven arches, the studio wanted to translate the brick structure&#8217;s curved forms in elevation into curved shapes in plan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2238864 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/albi-footbridge-ney-and-partners-france_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x638.jpg\" alt=\"Pedestrian bridge in France by New and Partners\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1770\"  \/>The footbridge curves between the arches of a railway viaduct<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The footbridge geometry is closely related to that of the railway viaduct,&#8221; Ney and Partners partner Matthieu Malli\u00e9 told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A waving pattern has been introduced to the walking line of the footbridge, matching the rhythm of the viaduct&#8217;s arches,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The bridge deck unfolds upstream to form balconies above the Tarn, each equipped with a bench located exactly at the mid-span of each arch of the railway viaduct, which provides shade and protection to the passers-by.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/08\/09\/tintagel-castle-bridge-william-matthews-associates-cornwall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/tintagel-castle-bridge-mattheew-williams-associates-photo-david-levene_dezeen_2364_sq_a-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Tintagel Castle Bridge by William Matthews Associates\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Tintagel Castle Bridge in Cornwall has a gap where it meets in the middle\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bridge aims to provide a link between Albi town centre and the neighbourhoods across the River Tarn, with spaces that offer moments to pause and observe the surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>Built in 1865, the masonry viaduct serves a railway that is still in operation.
