A new study has revealed insights into how inhibiting a cellular molecule could help thwart the onset of alcohol-related pancreatic cancer, potentially adding to doctors\u2019 understanding of how booze causes the deadly illness.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Published in the medical journal Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the findings explain in more detail how CREB, a DNA-binding protein previously linked to cancer of the pancreas,\u00a0contributes to disease setting in.<\/p>\n
\u201dOur model serves as an important platform for understanding how chronic inflammation related to alcohol consumption accelerates the development of pancreatic cancer,\u201d says University of Miami\u00a0Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center cancer biologist Dr\u00a0Siddharth Mehra.<\/p>\n
\u201dChronic, high alcohol use damages acinar cells in the pancreas, [which are] specialised cells that produce digestive enzymes,\u201d Dr Mehra and colleagues say, explaining that the impact, in turn, increases\u00a0inflammation and exacerbates damage to the pancreas.<\/p>\n
\u201dOver time, precancerous lesions can develop, increasing the risk for full-blown pancreatic cancer \u2013\u00a0one of the deadliest types of\u00a0tumours,\u201d the researchers warn.<\/p>\n
But the findings bring with them some hope that related treatments\u00a0could be developed.<\/p>\n
\u201dTargeting CREB may present a promising strategy to mitigate inflammation-driven pancreatic tumourigenesis,\u201d the team say in their\u00a0journal paper.<\/p>\n
