The edge of a hob extractor fan can also be seen behind her.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>X.com<\/p>\n<p>Lucy Connolly was given a 31-month prison term after her post in the wake of the Southport murders<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A woman who was jailed for stirring up racial hatred against asylum seekers has said she was made to be &#8220;Sir Keir Starmer&#8217;s political prisoner&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Lucy Connolly, from Northampton, was released on Thursday after <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5yl7p4l11po\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">serving 40% of her 31-month prison sentence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The 42-year-old wife of a Tory councillor had called for people to &#8220;set fire&#8221; to hotels housing asylum seekers in the wake of the <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cg5zmlvlrn4o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">Southport attack<\/a> in July 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Number 10 declined to comment, but earlier this year Sir Keir appeared to <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ceqggenyn03o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">defend the prison term in the House of Commons<\/a>, saying he was &#8220;against incitement to violence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In her first newspaper interview since her release, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2025\/08\/22\/lucy-connolly-interview\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">Connolly told the Telegraph <\/a>she considered herself and &#8220;several other people&#8221; to &#8220;absolutely&#8221; be political prisoners of the prime minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;I, for some reason, seem to have had the most coverage, but there are people that are in equally awful situations that shouldn&#8217;t be in there,&#8221; she said, speaking to journalist Allison Pearson, who had campaigned for Connolly&#8217;s release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;I think with Starmer he needs to practise what he preaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;He&#8217;s a human rights lawyer, so maybe he needs to look at what people&#8217;s human rights are; what freedom of speech means; and what the laws are in this country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755184337_952_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/3a87e660-366f-11f0-8947-7d6241f9fce9.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Northamptonshire Police A police custody photo of Lucy Connolly. She is wearing a pink top. \" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>Northamptonshire Police<\/p>\n<p>The former childminder posted her tweet on X on 29 July and was arrested on 6 August 2024<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">On 29 July last year &#8211; the day of the Southport attack &#8211; she had posted on X that there should be &#8220;mass deportation now&#8221; and said &#8220;if that makes me racist, so be it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Connolly&#8217;s post had been deleted before she was arrested on 6 August, but it had already been viewed 310,000 times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">She pleaded guilty to inciting racial hatred by publishing and distributing &#8220;threatening or abusive&#8221; written material on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">She is a former childminder whose husband is a Conservative <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cgq8dd7lng2o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">member of Northampton Town Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Connolly also told the Telegraph she was &#8220;upset and angry beyond belief&#8221; after the murders in Southport, and that she knew &#8220;how that feels because <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp3wkzgpjxvo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">I&#8217;ve lost a child&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Of course,[the tweet] wasn&#8217;t my finest moment and I don&#8217;t, I definitely don&#8217;t advocate violence or burning anything down or anything of the sort.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">She said she was considering legal action against the police over a statement that was released by the Crown Prosecution Service after her sentencing, which claimed she had told police in an interview that &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cps.gov.uk\/cps\/news\/updated-sentence-childminder-admits-inciting-racial-hatred-over-social-media-post\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">she did not like illegal immigrants<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;that children were not safe from them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Her comments had been &#8220;massively twisted and used against me&#8221;, she claimed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Volatile situation&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">When questioned about the sentence at Prime Minister&#8217;s Questions in May, Sir Keir said: &#8220;I am strongly in favour of free speech; we&#8217;ve had free speech in this country for a very long time and we protect it fiercely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;But I am equally against incitement to violence against other people.
