Russia has been ramping up efforts to influence Moldovans living abroad across Europe, sharing disinformation and fake news, the country\u2019s national security chief, Stanislav Secrieru, told POLITICO<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n

Moldova\u2019s presidential election last year, in which the country\u2019s liberal leader Maia Sandu won reelection, was marred by allegations of Russian interference. Moscow also targeted a simultaneous referendum on the country joining the EU, in which Moldovans voted \u201cyes\u201d by a narrow margin.<\/a><\/p>\n

In July, Sandu warned against \u201cunprecedented election meddling\u201d<\/a> ahead of September\u2019s election. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Russian Federation wants to control the Republic of Moldova from autumn onwards,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

European countries are considering opening a first \u201cnegotiating cluster\u201d for Moldova<\/a> \u2014 a key legal step on the path to the European Union membership \u2014 early next month after a meeting of EU ministers, according to three diplomats and an EU official.<\/p>\n

That move could send a signal to pro-EU voters in Moldova, but risks angering Ukraine, whose bid to join the bloc remains blocked by Hungary.
