Beaches are within easy reach, the lifestyle is more laidback compared to urban living and often the views are amazing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In fact recent research conducted by Regency Living, property specialists for the over-50s, found that the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/tourism\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">seaside<\/a> was the second happiest location to live, beaten only by the countryside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Using data from the UK House Price Index and happiness score data sourced from the UK Government\u2019s Annual personal well-being estimates, they found the cheapest and happiest seaside locations in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Porthmadog in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/north-wales\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">North Wales<\/a> was found to be the most affordable seaside location, with properties on average prices at \u00a3196,584.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Stay connected with our City Life newsletter <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=d1c9a1cf-d773-47a3-b51a-f456316221bc&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">With a happiness score of 7.51, it ranked higher than the average seaside happiness score of 7.33 and beat the likes of Whistable, Bournemouth, Torquay and Crosby.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Porthmadog-was-the-hottest-place-in-Wales-on-Tuesday-breaking-all-records-for-February-and-the-sec.jpeg\" alt=\"It's just a stone's throw away from the mountains of Snowdonia \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>It&#8217;s just a stone&#8217;s throw away from the mountains of Snowdonia (Image: Daily Post Wales)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Perched on the edge of Cardigan Bay and a stone\u2019s throw away from Eryri (Snowdonia) national park, Porthmadog is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and it\u2019s easy to see why people who live there are so happy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Even if you\u2019re not looking to relocate anytime soon, there\u2019s plenty of reasons why you should plan a visit to this stunning harbour town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Porthmadog doesn\u2019t have roots dating back centuries, in fact the town only sprang to life at the start of the 19th century when William Maddocks built a seawall called the Cob, creating a natural harbour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This transformed the area into a bustling transportation hub for nearby slate quarries including Ffestiniog and Llanfrothen, and the port flourished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In 1836 the Ffestiniog Railway opened to transport slate and today it\u2019s one of the area\u2019s major tourist attractions, starting at Porthmadog and ending at Blaenau Ffestiong, taking passengers on a scenic journey through Snowdonia National Park.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_File-Picture-Porthmadog-in-Gwynedd.jpg\" alt=\"The marina is full of coastal charm\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The marina is full of coastal charm(Image: Hadyn Iball \/ North Wales Live)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It\u2019s not the only railway route in the area. Porthmadog is also home to the Welsh Highland Railway and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/train-journey-worlds-most-breathtaking-23477803\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Lonely Planet even named the Welsh Highland Railway among the best rail experiences in Europe in 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Although not right by the beach, Porthmadog is brimming with coastal charm. The Cob is also worth checking out, providing a mile-long embankment across the estuary with flat paths and dramatic views.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Not far away from the town is Black Rock Sands beach, a two-mile stretch of sand named after the dark-coloured headlands which surround it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It\u2019s backed by a dune system &#8211; a Site of Special Scientific Interest &#8211; home to a variety of wildlife. Motorists can even park up on the beach when it\u2019s safe to do so, giving visitors easy access to the shore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Back in Porthmadog there\u2019s no shortage of cafes and pubs, including The Australia and Y Llong (The Ship).
